5 Radical Reconstruction Civil Rights Act of 1866 (a response to “black codes”) 14 th Amendment – guaranteed citizenship to all those born in the United States and the protection of their civil rights (now it couldn’t be overturned by the Supreme Court Reconstruction Act of 1867 – “Hard Reconstruction” Removed the governments of all states that had not ratified the 14 th Amendment Divided these states up into 5 military districts and subjected them to military rule 15 th Amendment – voting rights for freed slaves
