Energy and Motion Kinetic and Potential Energy

Energy We use the idea of energy in many ways in everyday life. - When fuel supplies run low we have an ‘energy crisis’. - People eat food to give them energy and we say that children have ‘lots of energy’ when they run around.

Kinetic Energy The energy of an object in motion. The faster an object moves, the greater its Kinetic Energy

Changes in Kinetic Energy ***Example*** In sports, such as soccer, the speed of the ball changes often. This change in speed equals a change in Kinetic Energy. As the speed of an object changes, the amount of Kinetic Energy it has also changes.

Types of Kinetic Energy Radiant (light) Radiant (light) Thermal (heat) Thermal (heat) Motion Motion Electrical Electrical Sound Sound Mechanical Mechanical

What do you think is necessary to change the Kinetic Energy of an Object?

Think about watching an ice-hockey game. Under what circumstances does the kinetic energy of the puck change during the game? Do these changes just happen on their own or is there an outside influence responsible? What happens to the puck when it is hit by a stick? What do you think would happen to the puck if noone stopped it. Think about a soccer game and how the players move the ball around the field. Does the ball move on its own or is there an outside influence on it. When the ball is kicked, does it continue to travel in the direction it was going forever?

Slowing and Stopping In the world around us nearly all moving objects, if left alone, seem to eventually slow down and stop. In the world around us nearly all moving objects, if left alone, seem to eventually slow down and stop. Why do moving objects tend to slow down and stop? Where does the energy go? Why do moving objects tend to slow down and stop? Where does the energy go?

Potential Energy Stored Energy or Energy Caused by an objects position.

Examples of Potential Energy A marble sitting at the top of a ramp. A marble sitting at the top of a ramp. A bowstring pulled back. A bowstring pulled back. A rock being held over the edge of a wall. A rock being held over the edge of a wall. A glass of water on the edge of a table. A glass of water on the edge of a table.

Types of Potential Energy Gravitational (ball held aloft) Gravitational (ball held aloft) Elastic (a compressed spring) Elastic (a compressed spring) Chemical (Can of Gas) Chemical (Can of Gas) Electrical (Battery) Electrical (Battery) Nuclear (atomic) Nuclear (atomic)

What do you think is necessary to change the Potential Energy of an object?

Summary Energy is? Energy is? What has Energy? What has Energy? Two Main Types of Energy? Two Main Types of Energy? How does energy affect Matter? How does energy affect Matter?
