All energy is either POTENTIAL or KINETIC. Potential energy is stored energy, either by an object’s position (gravity) or in chemical bonds. Kinetic energy is energy in motion or use. (Motion may be in waves, electrons, atoms, molecules, or objects)

Types of Potential Energy Gravitational – due to position Chemical – compounds contain energy in bonds. Nuclear – energy stored in the nucleus of an atom Stored Mechanical – energy stored in objects by application of force (compressed springs, stretched rubber bands)

Types of Kinetic Energy Electrical Light (or radiant) Heat (or thermal) Motion (wind, water) Sound (moves in waves)

The law of conservation of energy says that energy is neither created nor destroyed. When we use energy, it doesn’t disappear. It simply changes from one form of energy into another.

This guy just put a CD in the player and flipped the switch. Think about what really happens… The batteries, chemical energy, converts to electrical energy, causing the motor to spin the CD (mechanical energy), creating an electrical signal that is sent through a small wire to the headphones. In the headphones, the electrical signal is converted to sound energy. So, the Energy Transformation Diagram would be: Chemical → Electrical → Mechanical → Electrical → Sound Some energy transformations are more complex!!!
