Spirit of liberty w/in the colonists Same spirit when the Magna Carta was created King George didn’t like Pitt Lord North was in charge Colonies should be taught a lesson

4 Fighting Palm Trees Most ppl. agreed w/ Lord North Some said Boston or “nest of hornets” should be destroyed Boston would be hard to destroy Charleston, S. Carolina said easier to destroy Brit. Navy-scare the colonists in SC Armed fleet & 7 regiments of soldiers sent to SC

5 Fighting Palm Trees Unfinished fort on Sullivan’s Island-Charleston Harbor Palmetto logs Front=finished Sides=½ done Back=open Charles Lee called it a “slaughter pen” & should be abandoned SC Gov. John Rutledge or “Dictator John” wanted to defend it Col. William Moultrie commander of fort & said he could defend it

7 Fighting Palm Trees Brit. ships sailed into Charleston & got stuck on sand bars Unload men, destroy fort, & take Sullivan’s Island Cannon balls were stuck in the sand & palmetto log walls Brit. navy never saw anything like this before Soldiers going onto island-H20 was too deep “Unspeakable mortification” Ships stuck on sand bars/shoals=perfect targets left Charleston harbor-damaged or destroyed Sir Peter Parker (in charge of Brit. Fleet) wrote a poem about this
