3 Alliances  Central Powers Germany & Austria- Hungary  Allies France, Great Britain & Russia

4 Battle begins  July 23 Austria- Hungary blame Serbia for assassination  Russia begins mobilization of troops  France and German also ready troops

5 Germany moves to strike  Schlieffen Plan Quick sweep through France to knock them out of the war Stalemate at Marne River “No man’s land” Plan fails due to early victories by Russians

6 France moves to strike  Attack plan similar to Germany’s  Trench warfare appears on the scene  Fortified cities  British force helps out

7 New weapons used on the front  Poison Gas  Machine guns  Tanks  Rapid Fire artillery  Hand grenades  Airplanes
