7 Archaic First inhabitant of P.R.
Some archeologist believe that these inhabitant came from what we know today as Belize, a country in Central America. They reach the Antilles in canoes. Lived in many different places in Puerto Rico but mainly in the territories that are now Manati, Vega Baja, Ponce, Vieques.

8 Archaic : Tools And Food
They use stone, shells, bones, fish bones and wood to make tools. Examples: Mortars- bowl made of stone use for crushing different materials. Scrapers- tools that can scrape off the skin of fish and other things. Food They did not practice farming on a large scale. They fished ( clams, crabs, oysters), hunted (hutia, megalocnus ), and gathered seeds, roots, fruit. When it was difficult to find food in one place, they moved to another place where they can find more. People who move constantly without establishing a permanent place to live are called nomads.

9 Archaic: Shelter and social classes
Since they were nomads, they did not built complex houses or villages. Often settle in caves or made structures out of wood and straw. Lived in small family groups or clans. Were not divided into distinct social classes. No specialized division of labor this means that all of the members of the group shared task, such as looking for food.

10 Igneris Around the year 300 BC, the Igneris a group from the northeastern of what is known today as Venezuela arrived in the Antilles. They traveled in canoes through the lesser Antilles until they arrived in Puerto Rico. First settled in what is now Loiza but their remains have been also found in Guayanilla, Vega Baja, and Vieques. They were sedimentary and stablished villages where many family clans lived together. Their homes were called Bohios and in the center of the village, there was a square where rituals and everyday activities were held.

11 Igneris: Agriculture and food
Their villages were often located near a body of water since it was easier for them to collect the water they needed for: Farming: Soil near bodies of water, specially rivers, is very fertile which makes it good for farming. The Igneris were farmers so they did not travel all of their time to find food. Food Bodies of water provided food. The Igneris fished and ate for example: fish, turtles, crabs, etc… The fertile soil help them grow: Cassava, corn, pineapple, yautia and some fuit trees.

12 Igneris: Pottery, objects and tools
Made pottery – The beauty and craft of their pottery distinguish them from other native groups. They painted and decorated their pottery with white geometrical shapes or animals. Example of pottery: pitchers, jars and cups. They also made beads and decoration for their bodies from semiprecious stones. Tools : axes, mortal, stone polishers, scrapers and containers made out of shell.
