2 Passive Voice I am sure you’ve heard of Passive before. What is Passive? When do we use it? Why do we use it? How do we use it?

3 The bicycle was developed in 1790. Karlheinz Brandenburg is called “The father of MP3” GPS is used widely around the world. Maps won’t be used in the future.

4 Are these sentences in Passive? Or Active ? Are you confused? No wonder. Each tense in English has its own form in Passive.

5 What do those sentences have in common? They are all in Passive. How can I know that? Simple…. The Passive consists of 2 parts: Be + V 3

6 Are these sentences Active or Passive? People wear jeans. Active Cellphones are used widely. Passive. The television was invented in 1924. Passive. Graham Bell invented the telephone. Active.

7 And in Hebrew….? In Hebrew you don’t need to use the Passive as much because you can use an “unidentified” someone as your subject. הזמינו אותי למסיבה אמרו לי לבוא ב 8:00 שלחו לי בדואר But in English- you need the Passive.

8 When do we used the Passive. כשהפעולה יותר חשובה מאלה המבצעים אותה. ניתן להשתמש בסביל גם כאשר : 1) עושה הפעולה ברור מאליו Hebrew is spoken in Israel 2) כאשר עושה הפעולה לא ידוע או חסוי The criminal was caught during the robbery. 3) כאשר עושה הפעולה אינו חשוב Many new cars are bought in Israel every year.

9 How to form the Passive? To form the Passive we use Be + V3 Verbs end in ed Irregular verbs harm  harmed  harmed speak  spoke  spoken

10 A regular sentence has: Subject + verb + object They cook chickens. But in Passive everything changes.

11 The object becomes the subject. Chickens are cooked by them. And the subject moves to the end of the sentence together with “by” The verb is changed to BE+ V3

12 AGAIN They build roads everywhere. Roads are built everywhere by them. The dog ate the cat The cat was eaten by the dog.

13 By …. You can use the word BY to say who did the action. I  by me You  by you He  by him She  by her It  by it They  by them We  by us

14 Lets try together The witch cooked the soup. The soup was cooked by the witch He sends letters every week. Letters are sent every week by him. You will invite him. He will be invited by you.
