Requesting books in Alt Format Questions & Answers Q: What if I haven’t bought my books yet? Can I request my books in Alt Format before I have receipts? A: Yes! You can submit Alt Format requests as soon as you enroll in classes. In fact, we recommend it so books can be prepared for you as soon as possible. When you submit requests, we start the process of locating and converting the books. We can’t give you access to them until you provide receipts of course, but we can get them ready in advance.

Requesting books in Alt format Questions & Answers Q: How long does it take to convert the books? A: For digital books, it takes between 2-4 weeks. For Braille and other tactile formats, it can take up to 6 weeks to get the first chapter transcribed, embossed and delivered.

Requesting books in Alt format Questions & Answers Q: I am new and have not yet met with the ACT Center for my Consultation. Can I put in my book requests now before I meet with the ACT Center? A: Yes, you can put in requests before the ACT meeting. We would actually recommend that in order to shorten your waiting time.

Requesting books in Alt format Questions & Answers Q: What if my professor assigns a book that is not on the bookstore list? A: You can manually enter a book yourself. Go to the Alternative Formats page (slide 4) and scroll down the page to: ADDITIONAL BOOK OR READING MATERIALS. Select class, enter the book title and as many details as you know (e.g. author, edition #). That will help us to locate the correct book. Be sure to click “Submit Request” when complete.

Requesting books in Alt Format Questions & Answers Q: What if only some (or none) of my courses are showing up on the book list on the ALTERNATIVE FORMATS page? A: Check to see if you checked the box to select “Alternative textbook format” when you selected accommodations in each of your courses. Note: If you need more details on where and how to select accommodations for your courses, please review the tutorial called “ myAccess Accommodation Renewal” located on our website.
