3. History/Status Many groundwater investigations have occurred at Area B since 1977. Ft. Detrick held ongoing partnering meetings with EPA and MDE to identify the data needs to define the nature and extent of groundwater contamination and assess risk. Work Plan Objectives Objective A: Confirm Groundwater Flow Direction – The overall groundwater flow directions within the shallow and deep flow components and in wet/dry seasons will be established so that the adequacy of the well network can be evaluated and improved as needed Objective B: Determine Depth of Contamination and Groundwater Flow – The depth of contamination and the extent to which groundwater underflows Carroll Creek will be determined Objective C: Establish Appropriate Monitoring Network – An appropriate monitoring network will be evaluated and developed to characterize the nature and extent of contamination, evaluate risk to on- site and off-site receptors, and monitor the Area B disposal areas (B-2, B-3, B-6, B-8/10/11, and B-18) 4 Fort Detrick, Maryland A Sustainable Community of Excellence

Residential Well Testing Requests Residential Well Testing Requests. – Conducted sampling at over 70 residential wells. – Tested 29 wells since June 2010. – Results have been shared with MDE and EPA. – All current results are non-detect for VOCs associated with Fort Detrick. Interview Project Fort Detrick, Maryland A Sustainable Community of Excellence The Army is interested in interviewing former employees and individuals that have historic knowledge of past activities at Fort Detrick. A contract is underway to arrange and conduct interviews.
