2 Berlin Wall – East Germany Communist East German Govt is harsh, many East Germans tried to escape to the west In 1961, E. Germany closes the border with W. Germany E. Germans begin building a wall in Berlin to stop defections E. German troops ordered to shoot any who try to defect to W. Berlin

3 Uprisings in Hungary 1956, Khruschev begins “De-Stalinization”& peaceful competition w/ W In Hungary, angry mobs storm the capital city of Budapest Liberal communist Imre Nagy is a leader of the rebellion, he forms a new government & calls for free elections Soviets send in tanks and troops to end the rebellion Prague Spring - Czechoslovakia In Prague, a writers strike begins a large protest movement Czech leader Alexander Dubchek starts relaxing some laws (speech) People start writing about new ideas during the “Prague Spring” By Summer, the Soviet army invades CZ and replaces Dubchek
