2 Using Be verbs: The basics  What is your name?  My name is Ed.  Where are you from?  I am from Japan.  We are in the classroom. Simple present tense be verbs are used to state facts. Kenia is a female. She is a student. Jorge is a male. He is a student.

3 Be verbs in English Noun Verb Noun  I am a teacher.  You are a student.  John is a doctor. Noun Verb Adjective  Sara is attractive.  Paul is handsome.  Amy is tall. Noun Verb Preposition  Naomi is in Mexico.  Steve is from Canada.  Ed is under the desk.

4 am  I am from Egypt.  Am is always used with I.  Where is Egypt on the map? (p.5)

5 using “am”  I am a teacher.  I am Japanese.  I am a male.  I am short.  I am sleepy.  I am hungry.  I am thirsty.

6 is  Sally is from Canada.  Canada is a country.  “Is” is singular tense.

7 using “is” in the classroom  This is a wall.  This is a pen.  This is a piece of paper.  This is a desk.  This is a chair.  This is a book.  This is a notebook.

8 Noun + is + Noun: Singular Noun + is + Noun Mexico is a country. Japan is a country. Spanish is a language. Japanese is a language. A cat is an animal.

9 Singular means “one.” Honduras is a country. Dominican Republic is a country. Guatemala is a country. El Salvador is a country. A cat is an animal. A dog is an animal. A mouse is an animal. A monkey is an animal. Honduras = a singular noun is = a singular verb country = a singular noun

12 quick note on articles: A cat is an animal. A is used in front of words that begin with consonants: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, y, z. An in front of words that begin with vowels: a, e, i, o, and u. Also x*. Examples: “An apple”, NOT “a apple” “An orange”, NOT “a orange” “A boy”, NOT “an boy”

19 are  “Are” is also used in the singular tense when the pronoun “you” is in the subject position.  You (one person) are from El Salvador.
