Finding hair colour Level 6

 Hair colour is determined usually by hereditary  Colour is produced at the dermal papilla and it presence is in the cortex  Hair colour is produced in pigment pockets known as melanacites  There are 2 main pigments melanin and pheomelanin

 Melanin can also be known as granular pigment as it is quite large in size and globular in shape  It is brownish black in colour remember this colour is made from the three primary colours red – blue – yellow = brown

 Pheomelanin is also known as diffuse pigment  This is due to it being small in size & how it scatters through the cortex  It is yellowish red in colour

 White hair is when pigment stops producing at the dermal papilla  It is white as there is a total absence of melanin in the hair  It is not grey! It only appears grey as the white hair blends in with the natural hair colour giving the hair colour this appearance

 International colour code / chart  This system is used by hairdressers so that we can be precise when using colours  Colours start from 1 being black – 10 being lightest blonde

 1 – Black  2 - Darkest Brown/Black  3 – Dark Brown  4 – Brown  5 – Light Brown  6 – Dark blonde  7 – Blonde  8 – Light Blonde  9 – Very Light Blonde  10 – Lightest Blonde

 Take a section away from the natural parting ( sun will lighten natural parting making it appear lighter)  Hold the section down completely flat ( this stops from light reflecting through the hair and making it appear lighter)  Cover the previously coloured hair  Look at the colour is it BLACK, BROWN or BLONDE  Is it LIGHT – MEDIUM – DARK  Now put a number to it using the I.C.C

 Keeping the hands the same way as when finding the base  Push forefingers inwards and raise the hair into a crest  Look for strands of Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue running through the hair.

Looking at different areas around the head. What is predominate the white hair or the natural base

 Wrap it tightly round finger to stop light reflects from coming through  Look at the depth the same way you would when finding base  Look at the tone is it warm cool  Now try to match it with shade chart

 This information is vital before carrying out colour service. Why ?
