2 Provincial Exams  Make sure you are not late for your exam  Exams count for 20% of your overall mark in a subject  Exams are also possibly used to calculate your getting a scholarship in gr. 12!!  Exam dates:  Thursday, June 23 9-11  English  Friday, June 24 1-3  Science  Monday, June 28 1-3  Math

3 LONG RANGE PLANNING Need to start thinking a bit about what you will do AFTER GRADUATION! START THINKING…

4 UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE ENGLISH 12 (usually min 70% or higher ) + 3 Grade 12 academic courses (check on those that are acceptable to the school & the program you wish to enter) Some programs have grade 11 course requirements as well. ~Consider a University Transfer Program via College~

5 Acceptable Grade 12 courses for MOST B.C. Institutions: In addition to English 12 -French 12-Pre-Calculus 12 -Social Justice12-Physics 12 -History 12-Chemistry 12 -Geography 12-Biology 12 -Law 12 -BC First Nations 12 … there are more, but these are the courses offered by DCSS

9 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS GRADE 11 REQUIREMENTS English 11 a Social Studies 11 *** * a Science 11 Bible 11 A Mathematics 11 (Foundations Math 11 or Apprenticeship and Workplace Math 11 or Pre- Calculus 11) *** Has a provincial exam worth 20%

11 Communications 11 Intended for students who are not planning on going to university or for those who do not pass English 10 Does enable a student to “officially” graduate Will lead to Communications 12 not English 12 Course offerings depend upon number of participants. English 11 Open to students who pass English 10 If you do not pass English 10, you will have to repeat it some time in the next two years and you will need to do Comm 11 next year

12  GRADE 11  You must take one of the following:  Socials 11  BC First Nations 12 (may not be offered again until 2017-2018)  GRADE 12  These are courses that you can also take next year, as Socials 10 is the requirement:  Comparative Civilizations 12  Geography 12  History 12  Law 12  Social Justice 12

13 You must pass one science 11 or 12 to graduate If you are going in to the Health, Engineering, Science fields in college or university, you are likely to need TWO gr. 12 sciences; therefore, you must take the gr. 11 science first (except for Biology)

14 EARTH SCIENCE 11: A science aimed at helping students achieve the science requirement for graduation. BIOLOGY 11/12: An academic science. CHEMISTRY 11/12: An academic science and a strong math background required. Foundations Math 10 minimum. PHYSICS 11/12: An academic science and a strong math background required. Foundations Math 10 minimum. Must be taking Math 11 Pre-Calculus as well.

15 Math 11 Pre-Calculus Pre-Calculus 11 requires that students have passed Foundations of Math & Pre-Calculus 10. The goal of Pre-Calculus 11 is to prepare students for Pre-Calculus 12. This course will prepare students who are going to university in the sciences, health, business programs Math 11 – Foundations Foundations 11 is an online math course that provides students with an acceptable level of math for those who are interested in going to college or into university in the arts/humanities. Math 11 – Apprenticeship &Workplace This course is geared towards students who are not intending to go to university OR who are intending to go into the trades.

17 A Second Language Is a Second Language Required for… Graduation? No Trades or vocational programs? No University entrance? For some, yes It depends on if you go straight to university from high school, the program you choose, & the university/college you attend. It’s a good idea to keep your options open!!

18 Consider EXTERNAL CREDITS … A student can earn extra school credits for participation in some specific programs – here are just a FEW: Driver Training Course Girl Guides / Cadets Provincial & National level sport teams NLS & Bronze Cross (swimming) Royal Conservatory Music levels Credits are given for SPECIFIC levels of participation as determined by the Ministry of Ed. Check with Mrs. Spencer!

19 So... Let’s Review In grade 11 you must take:  An English 11  A Socials 11***  A Math 11  Bible 11  A Science 11  PLUS... 3 elective courses (make sure you have at least one Applied Skill or Fine Art course some time between gr. 10-12 ) IF YOU ARE GOING TO UNIVERSITY YOU MUST PLAN TO EVENTUALLY HAVE 3 GR. 12 COURSES THAT ARE CONSIDERED ACADEMIC!!!!.

20 Next year’s timetable will be built based on your choices now. Therefore, changing courses will NOT be simple.

English 10 Open to ALL students Content covered related to the regular program Provincial exam

23 SCIENCE 10 Topics include: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science SCIENCE 10 HONOURS A and a G and by teacher recommendation. Enrichment to the regular program Excellent preparation for Biology11 Honours, Chemistry 11 Honours, and Physics 11 Honours Great challenge for those passionate about Science

24 You will be recommended by your Math teacher for either Foundations Math 10 or Apprenticeship &Workplace Math 10 (A&W). Foundations Math 10 Leads to possible University entrance Topics: algebra, measurement, number relations and functions A&W Math 10 Focuses on Math skills required for most Trades programs like algebra, statistics, and probability Will meet grad requirements *Note - Both of these courses have mandatory provincial exams

25 Foundations Math 10 leads to the Math classes in grade 11 and 12 which are required for entry to most universities. So … 1.Consider your options. 2.Research program requirements. Important Consideration

26 PE 10 PE 10 is a REQUIRED course for graduation Choose: Regular PE 10 OR Dance 10 OR Hockey 10 OR Baseball 10 Note: Outdoor Ed is not a PE credit, it is an elective
