11 1. Students select their courses 2. Individual course requests are tallied 3. The overall number of sections needed in each course are calculated (7 sections of English 11)

12 4. The master timetable is built based upon that number of sections for each course 5. Students are loaded into course sections based upon the choices they make in February. 6. Students wishing to change their choices at a later date may not be able to due to full classes.

13 This means that … If you chose Biology in February and you decide in June that you would like to take Photo you may not be able to because we scheduled for the Biology class. Despite Ms. Nickel’s immense talents she is not interested in teaching a Photo class.

14 The BC Graduation Program began in grade 10. This means that the courses students take in their grade 10, 11 and 12 years will become their permanent graduation transcript.

15 Required courses for graduation include: An English 11 A Math 11 A Science 11 Social Studies 11* (PE 10 and Planning 10 – in the unlikely event these were not completed in grade 10) (*this course has a Provincial Exam worth 20% of the student’s grade)

16 Required courses for graduation include: An English 12* 3 Additional grade 12 level courses Graduation Transitions (MAP) (*this course has a Provincial Exam worth 40% of the student’s grade)

17 Some Universities have grade 11 completion requirements for certain subjects and programs. These courses are not used in the calculation of the student’s admission average. Some examples of this are… A second language 11 for entrance Pre-Calculus Math 11 for entrance Chemistry 11 and Physics 11 for B.Sc.

19 Most post secondary institutions will calculate a student’s admission average based upon 4 or 5 approved academic subjects, one being English 12 It is each student’s responsibility to check the specific requirements of the school and program they wish to apply for. Information can be found on the institutions’ websites, view books in the counselling centre, the What’s Next Guide and the information board outside the counselling Centre.

20 English 11 is a graduation requirement. Most of our students will take regular En 11. You may choose English 11 Honours if your average is 85% or greater. Enrollment in English 11 Honours will be finalized based on Teacher recommendation.

21 A Math 11 course is a graduation requirement. Pre-Calculus 11 is designed for direct entrance to University Foundations 11 may be accepted for direct entrance to some university programs. Students with 85% or greater in Math 10 may be recommended for Honours Pre-Calculus Math Apprenticeship & Workplace Math 11 is designed for students who intend to enter trades based post secondary education. It is also intended for student who may struggle with some of the more abstract concepts in the Foundations and Pre-Calc MATH.

22 A Science 11 course is a graduation requirement. Students with 85% or greater in Science 10 may be recommended for our Science Honours classes. This is a pre-requisite for the AP biology program.

23 All Students take SS 11 as it is a graduation requirement.

24 Many students will continue with a second language 11 as their first elective. Some BC universities require a second language 11 for entrance. (Additional Information about 2 nd language requirements is located on the rolling board outside the counselling centre)
