4 - Most students have poor essay writing skills  difficulty to organise and develop ideas into the form of essay - No training in conducting library research -  do not know how to search for info in the Net

5 - Able to write in separated paragraphs - No proper introduction/conclusion to the topics in the essays - plagiarism - To design a course that could help to master both skills mentioned above  focus: cognitive strategies in developing ideas in writing

6 Design goal: 1) able to conduct library research 2) able to conduct internet research 3) develop skills to organise information 4) write research, include opinions (avoid plagiarism) Principles outlined: a) Gagne’s 5 categories of learning b) Bloom’s Taxonomy

8 The course consists of: - 14 regular sessions (90 minutes) - short quizzes in every session - a test Materials utilised: - powerpoint presentation - short quizzes - software to keep record of students performance

9 Use “General Approaches to teaching Cognitive Strategies (Presley, Snyder & Carglilia-bull, 1987)  discovery and guided discovery  guided participation  observation  strategy instructions in books and courses  Dyadic Instruction

10 2 parts of evaluation a) evaluation of students’ work - students will be rated by instructors on their ability to complete tasks in every session - short quizzes - exam (right after the course) b) course evaluation by students - students answer questionnaire - rate the course and give suggestion
