3 WHY DID AMERICA AVOID WAR?

4 ISOLATION Led by the Charles Lindbergh, isolationists were a vocal minority who wanted to put “America First” and resisted involvement in the war. 1935 Neutrality Act limited the government’s ability to support Britain and France. 1937 Quarantine Speech was given prevent the spread of war after Japan attacked China, but it upset many isolationists.

5 NEUTRAL IN NAME 1940 Roosevelt reelected for a third term. 1940 As the crisis increased Congress passed the first peacetime conscription bill 1941 Lend-Lease Act provided arms to any nation deemed vital to the defense of the United States (Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union) British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Roosevelt issue a joint statement of war aims in the Atlantic Charter (similar to Wilson’s fourteen points).
