2 Objectives 10/9 & 10/10 Objectives: --I will know (knowledge): how different Christian Churches were created throughout Europe due to the Catholic Church’s policies and beliefs. --I will be able to (skill): analyze documents and come to conclusions about Martin Luther’s motivations for splitting from the Catholic Church. Procedures: 1.Counselor presentation 2.Introduce the RSP and practice analyzing a document. 3.PowerPoint notes 4.Martin Luther document analysis

3 Causes of the Reformation Protestant Reformation—a religious reform movement that split the Catholic church in western Europe Causes: 1.Popes were acting like politicians or soldiers 2.Corrupt priests 3.Weak rulers couldn’t fight against corrupt popes 4.Selling indulgences—pay money to be pardoned from sin

4 Martin Luther Martin Luther was a monk who disagreed with church practices, especially selling indulgences He said that people could reach salvation through their inner faith in God, not by their actions Luther protested by posting 95 theses (statements) on a church door--a list of reasons why he hated indulgences Church officials quickly got word of this protest and weren’t happy

5 Lutheranism Martin Luther said that popes and priests were not more important than regular church goers Luther used the printing press to attack church practices He was excommunicated from the Catholic church Diet of Worms—special meeting where Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) said that Luther was an outlaw and could no longer publish his writings

6 The Counter-Reformation Attempt to stop the spread of Protestantism Pope Paul III and the Inquisition—find heretics and burn them at the stake Index of Forbidden Books— Catholics couldn’t read books contained in this list that go against morals and faith

7 Council of Trent Called by Pope Paul III in 1545 Goals: To end abuses of indulgences and tighten church discipline Said that God granted forgiveness only through the church—ceremonies and priests are important Salvation comes from individual faith and ceremonial church actions

8 Results Wars between the different religious groups Education became more important—new universities (Jesuits) Reading became more important—people wanted to study the Bible The Pope became less important
