Warm Up: Label all the continents and oceans on your maps. South Southern Ocean North What is this body of water? Gulf of Mexico Caribbean Sea

Demonstration: Spin the globe 10X. Count how many times the student’s finger lands on land and water. Why do you think the Earth is called a water planet? Demonstration: Spin the globe 10X. Count how many times the student’s finger lands on land and water. Why do you think the Earth is called a water planet?

Earth-The Water Planet Land Area on the Planet: 29% (148,647,000 sq km) Total Water Area: 71% (361,419,000 sq km)

Water on Earth 1.One of the few substances on Earth that can be naturally found in all three states. a.Gas -water vapor in atmosphere b. Solid - glaciers and polar ice masses c. Liquid- water fresh and salt on the surface and under ground Evaporation Transpiration

What is Aquatic Science? Or what will we be doing in this class all year?

Aquatic Science: the study of aquatic systems both fresh water and marine. Marine Science: the study of all aspects of the ocean, a combination of marine biology and oceanography. Marine Biology: Study of Marine Biology: study of life in the ocean. Oceanography: study of physical (non-living) characteristics of the ocean which includes salinity, light, temperature, pressure, ocean movements. An aquatic system = all living things (plants and animals)+ non-living elements (salinity, light, temperature) in a particular area.

What Sciences are included in the study of Aquatic Science?

Oil spill in Gulf Phytoplankton (algae) bloom El Nino

Aquatic Science Biology: study of living organisms Chemistry: study of the composition and properties of matter. Physics: study of forces and energy Meteorology: study of climate Geology: study of the physical structure of the Earth Astronomy: study of outer space.

Summary  Water covers 71% of the Earth  Water is found as vapor, water and ice  Aquatics is the study of water systems both fresh and marine.  Aquatics is a science which combines other branches of science including biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and Space science
