1 Emergencies and first aid Standard 3 Objective 1

2 Preparing for emergencies Why? Take all reasonable measures to protect the safety of children. How? Written policies and procedures

3 Minor cuts and abrasions Wash your hands If bleeding apply direct pressure until bleeding stops (with cloth) After bleeding stops check for glass, dirt or other materials in wound Flush with water or use tweezers Cover with a Band-Aid

4 1st degree burn Immerse in cool water, no ice (ice can harm the tissue) Blot gently and apply burn cream Cover with a dry, clean, non-stick pad

5 2 nd degree burn Blistering How do you handle it? burn cream or doctor

6 Bumps and bruises Cold cloth or ice pack Elevation

7 Pink eye (conjunctivitis) Eyes are red, goopy, --very contagious – send home so not to pass on to other people (communicable disease)

8 Procedure when child ingests poison Call poison control – 1-800-222-1222

9 choking Encourage them to cough Don’t pound on back or stick finger down throat Use abdominal thrust or Heimlich maneuver

10 Bloody nose Sit up and tilt head slightly forward Tissue Gently pinch soft part of nose Don’t have them lean back!!!

11 Bee sting or minor puncture wound Use tweezers to pull out stinger Ice to decrease swelling or mud as necessary

12 Child has a temperature Call parent ***Fever of 102 needs to go home

13 School emergency - fire What to do?What to do? Follow school proceduresFollow school procedures Where to take children?Where to take children? Call parents to pick them up at your fire drill spot

14 School Emergency Earthquake Climb under tables When notified, walk outside to meeting place. Intruder Lock door and stay out of sight (windows)
