GRADING RUBRIC Appropriate Visuals for Every Slide Evidence of Effective Writing (good paragraphs/sentences) Personalized Language (no cut and paste) Synthesis of Major Ideas Attention to Details/Instructions

DEFINITION Read the following articles. Then, in a well written OCI paragraph, explain where Modernism comes from. In the paragraph, you must incorporate three properly used citations – as found in your notes: Article 1 Article 2

MODERN ART Look at This Presentation and follow these instructions:This Presentation 1.Find a picture for both schools of art 2.Add two slides (label them according to the subject) 3.In the first slide, find two pictures that represent the schools of art 4.Add two text boxes 5.In the left box, write a letter from the perspective of something in the picture. Start with with the phrase: “Look at me...” (then describe what that character sees – 150 words) 6.In the right box, write as if the picture is explaining itself – talk about colors, actions, light, dark, clarity(150 words)

LITERATURE Read the following definitions: Realism Naturalism Read the first two paragraphs of the following short stories: Realism – House of Mirth, Edith WhartonHouse of Mirth Naturalism – Call of the Wild, Jack LondonCall of the Wild Modernism – Night and Day, Virginia WoolfNight and Day Then, on the next slide, find a picture that represents each story. Under each picture, write a one sentence summary that explains the subject of each (hint: they are all different, so ask yourself “what is the author focusing on here, and why?”

POETRY Create a word montage (a collection of words) that characterizes Modern Poetry both in form (the way it looks) and in theme (key ideas). Use this reading to get your definition. Use these example to examine form.this reading these example

FOUND POEM Read this excerpt: Already it was deep summer on roadhouse roofs and in front of wayside garages, where new red gas-pumps sat out in pools of light, and when I reached my estate at West Egg I ran the car under its shed and sat for a while on an abandoned grass roller in the yard. The wind had blown off, leaving a loud, bright night, with wings beating in the trees and a persistent organ sound as the full bellows of the earth blew the frogs full of life. The silhouette of a moving cat wavered across the moonlight, and turning my head to watch it, I saw that I was not alone — fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbor’s mansion and was standing with his hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars. Something in his leisurely movements and the secure position of his feet upon the lawn suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share was his of our local heavens. Put a line through the words you don’t find important (leaving only words and phrases that do). Then, create a new slide. Take your phrases, and lay them out as a poem on this page.

MUSIC Listen to these two piece of music (a little should be enough): Take the A Train – Duke Ellington Take the A Train Nocturne, Opus 9, No 2 – Chopin Nocturne, Opus 9, No 2 Then, create a slide with two text boxes: Left Box – Describe the music you are listening to starting with a metaphorical phrase: “This music is (a noun)...” (50 words). Writing should use details from the music to compare to the noun you have chosen. Right Box – Describe the music you are listening to as a simile starting with the line “This music is like (a noun)...” (50 words) Writing should use details from the music to compare to the noun you have chosen.

PICASSO Click HereClick Here - CubismClick HereClick Here - Bauhaus Create a slide that uses pictures to show how Modernism effected Architecture (demonstrate what buildings used to look like before/after

THIS IS MODERNISM Make this picture bigger, and annotate it. Use arrows, circles, and words to describe why this building is Modernism. Use the terms and ideas you have gathered from your reading above. You have definition, you have seen examples. Now make application.
