1 When: 6:00pm Fri Jan 15 th - 11:00am Sat Dec 16 th Where: NSBC, behind the Fellowship Hall Why: This is the follow up to the Camping Class given last season. This is the reason your son joined Cub Scouts!!!! General Info It’s winter. Time to get out and camp! We are going camping at the church! There is a good reason that we are not driving off to some exotic location for this first campout. What if you forgot something? No problem, jump in the car and go get it! What if your cub gets scared of the night time sounds? No problem, you are in a familiar place! What if, what if, what if… This is a great opportunity to work out the kinks that parents, new to camping run into on their first or second camping trips. You will be able to see how other “seasoned” campers do it, ask questions, learn helpful tips on gear prep, set up and cooking and watch your son have a great time doing what every boy wants to do - camp!.. All with out the risk of being uncomfortable. (well, too uncomfortable….) The majority of our Leaders are Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) trained and can help you with any questions you may have. Don’t have the gear? Ask your Den Leader, most of us have a lot of extra gear from tents to sleeping bags. Food/drink: Provided by the family. Try to plan something to cook/make at camp though. (P,B&J counts, you can even toast it!!) Gear: Each family will provide their own gear. If you need something ask. There will be a “patrol kitchen” set up with 2 2 burner stoves and a ground stove. There will also be a few “fire tables” set up with charcoal. Small table top grills are a good idea and a “fire area” will be set up to keep those that aren’t cooking, out of harms way. The kitchen will be open for cleaning and we will have a Pack Safety area. (you can omit those items from the packing list of the reverse side). Bring what you think will make you comfy without breaking the bank! Cub Scout Achievements / Electives Every rank has some type of outdoor/camping Achievement or Electives, be it camping, hiking, cooking, Leave No Trace, playing. This is a great opportunity to get these things signed off! Even if you can’t stay overnight, come out for the lessons and the Service Project.

2 Cold Weather Packing List Clothes  Sweat shirt/hoodie  Long pants (not sweats or track)  Long sleeve shirt  Tee-shirt  Gloves  Beanie cap  Coat  Thick socks  PJs - thermals (change clothes before getting in the bag!)  Rain gear (poncho/rain coat &pants) Several thin layers are way better than one big layer. Your boy can run around in a few layers and add more later when he cools down. Gear  Tent (smaller is better)  Sleeping bag  Blankets /pillows (if needed)  Sleeping mat  Cooler  Flashlights/batteries  Eating utensals (plates, forks, ect)  Camp chair  Small first aide kit Food This is a great opportunity for your Cub to get some camp cooking in! In cold weather, you want to go a bit heavier on the carbohydrates because your body is using a lot of energy to keep warm. You will also need water, about 2 gal per person. It is a lot easier to get dehydrated in the cold than in the heat!! “Pack light, freeze at night.” - Unknown Marine As this is a simple overnighter, we can get away with not getting the latest in high-tech, space age cold weather gear. If you really want to know what to buy for cold camping, ask Mr. Blue on the campout! Notes Our tents will be set up a few feet from where you are parking so don’t be afraid to over pack to maintain comfort. Some of us camp with an A/C in the summer and you could show us something we have never though of - that’s the great thing about Cub Scout camping, you will always learn something!!
