3 British invade Washington D.C. In 1814, the British captured the capital & burned the White House.

A The saving of the portrait by Dolly Madison on the day of the burning of the White House served as a symbol of American independence and perseverance. 5 Francis Scott Key Fort McHenry: (1814) British attack on a fort in Maryland, just north of Washington D.C. This is an American victory and where Francis Scott Key is inspired to write a poem that will later become our national anthem.

8 Battle of New Orleans: (1815) General Andrew Jackson defeated a British invasion force at New Orleans becoming a war hero. This battle was fought after the treaty ending the war had been signed.

9 War comes to an end: Treaty of Ghent:Treaty of Ghent: In Dec. 1814, peace was signed between the U.S. & England.
