4 LESSON: SUMMARIZING TEXTS DEFINITION DEFINITION: To write a summary of a passage is to reduce it to its main idea and key supporting facts. The purpose of writing a summary is to be able to accurately answer questions about the text later and to make inferences about its implied meanings. EXAMPLE EXAMPLE: 1.POEM: “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson 2.MAIN IDEA: Stating that she could not stop for death means that the speaker didn't have a choice about when she was to die.
