13 Now think about everything you know about Napoleon….and answer the questions at the bottom. What was Napoleon’s greatest mistake? Please use examples and specifics to explain why this mistake was so terrible? What do you think was Napoleon’s legacy to France? That is, what do you think happened during his rule that had a lasting effect on France?

14 Please get a Pg. 50A/B: Napoleon in Context handout Directions: Read each quote issued by Napoleon and the source information that accompanies it. In the spaces below each quote, briefly explain the context (using the textbook and class notes) and how it helps to inform Napoleon’s ideas at that time. What “Context” mean: What is Napoleon saying and why is he saying it? Is he defending an action? Which one? Is he explaining an opinion? Why does he feel he needs to do that? Use the dates of the quote and what you know about what was happening at that time.

15 Let’s try one… Document 1 “I can no longer obey. I have tasted command. I have tasted power and I cannot give it up. I love power.” Source: General Napoleon Bonaparte to Andre Francois, private conversation in 1788

16 Over All…. Taking everything you know about Napoleon together… Do you think he was MORE of a Democrat or an Autocrat?
