Presentation by Madeline Gelmetti

 Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder  Students with ADHD can be inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive  One of the most common childhood disorders  Effects both children and adults

 Difficultly staying focused  Difficultly paying attention  Difficultly controlling self and behavior  Hyperactivity  Impulsive  Inattentive

 May distract fellow classmates and interrupt lessons  Struggle to follow directions  Forgetful  Can lack fine motor coordination  Trouble with long-term projects or unsupervised activities

 Don’t seat the student near doors, windows or areas with a higher distractibility rate  Incorporate physical activity in lessons and throughout the day  Change the student’s long work periods into smaller chunks with breaks in-between

 Find a “secret code” hand gesture or word for when student is talking out of place. This lets them know they are interrupting without embarrassing them  Praise the student when they are involved, paying attention, and not talking out of turn

 Have a written behavior plan that the student is aware of  Consequences for negative behaviors should occur directly after and need to be explained to the student  Give praise and let the student know often when they are doing well  Have a schedule available to the student, and allow them to “cross off” periods as the day goes on

 Give the student extra tasks to involve moments even if it is only a little  Encourage sports and outdoors activity to get out energy  Let the student use putty, stress ball, or other small and quiet object to fidget with discreetly  Never take away a student’s recess or gym period as punishment

 Be brief when giving directions  Allow the student to do each step one at a time, and then receive the next direction after the previous one is completed  Make directions easily accessible for the student  If they are off task, redirect them calmly but firmly
