2 The Primary process. Lincoln nominated by Republicans in the North Democrats can’t agree over the party platform. Unsure of what to do with Slavery in the territories. -Northern Democrats: Popular sovereignty -Southern Democrats: Want slavery protected in the territories

3 Northern Democrats come out on top. Democrats from the North and South hold their party convention in Charleston, South Carolina. Can’t decide what to do with Slavery. Southerner Democrats want slavery defended in the territories, Northern Democrats want popular sovereignty for territories. Northern Democrats win the platform vote. 50 Southern delegates walk out of convention. Nomination of Stephen A. Douglas.

4 Disgruntled southerners nominate their own candidate. John Breckinridge, of Kentucky. Current Vice President and supporter of Slavery. Constitutional Union party for preservation of the Union. Nominates John Bell.

8 Southern States do the unthinkable. South Carolina the first to secede. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana follow SC. 1861, seceded states meet in Montgomery, Alabama. Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis is president.
