2 1860 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION  *THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY’S PLATFORM WAS TO DEFEND SLAVERY.  *THERE WERE 2 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES.  *NORTHERN CANDIDATE: STEPHEN DOUGLAS  *SOUTHERN CANDIDATE: JOHN BRECKINRIDGE

3 REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE  *THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE : ABRAHAM LINCOLN.  HE WON THE ELECTION WITH 180 ELECTORAL VOTES, ALL FROM THE NORTH.  *THIS ELECTION SHOWED THAT THE U.S. WAS SPLIT ON SLAVERY.

4 SECESSION  *THE FIRST STATE TO SECEDE WAS SOUTH CAROLINA.  *MISSISSIPPI WAS THE SECOND STATE TO SECEDE.  *WAR BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH BEGAN IN 1861.

5 BATTLES IN MISSISSIPPI  THE NORTH FELT THAT IF THEY COULD CONTROL THE MS RIVER, THEY COULD WIN THE WAR  MANY BATTLES WERE FOUGHT OVER CONTROL OF THE RIVER

6 LIFE DURING THE WAR  MEN FOUGHT  WOMEN MADE UNIFORMS AND SERVED AS NURSES  BECAUSE MEN WERE GONE, THERE WAS A FEAR OF SLAVE REBELLION  SIMPLE NECESSITIES OF LIFE BECAME LUXURIES SUCH AS SALT, TEA, AND COFFEE.

7 THE END OF SLAVERY  *ONCE THE UNION OFFICERS ARRIVED IN MISSISSIPPI, SLAVES BEGAN TO FEEL SECURE AND FLEE.  *IN 1862, PRESIDENT LINCOLN ISSUED THE EMANCIPATION PROCLOMATION. SLAVERY DID NOT OFFICIALLY END UNTIL 1865 WITH THE 13 TH AMENDMENT.  DO “IT’S YOUR TURN” ON PAGE 127 ANSWERS ONLY
