7 Managing Conduct Respect and civility at all times - WSLL has ZERO TOLERANCE for inappropriate behavior Manage parent/fan behavior - stress positive expectations Know sexual abuse/harassment* policies - protect your players and yourselves with common sense policies and practices Dress code - Clean neat shirt, shorts/sweats - Team hat (full uniforms not permitted for coaching staff) * Those in position of authority may not suggest, invite, or extend sexual favors, or subject anyone to verbal or physical sexual behaviour. 7

8 Handling on field issues Keep it in perspective – this is 5T, T-Ball and A Ball Rules: have your gray book and green book available Conflict or behavior concerns: - Do not attempt to resolve “in the heat of the moment” - Allow 24-hour cool down period League Director (LD) is your primary contact for issues Keep it in perspective – this is 5T, T-Ball and A Ball 8

9 Manager - Parent Relations Set expectations early - Schedule early mandatory meeting - Find a host - Have agenda Lay out ground rules Get parents involved Maintain regular contact with parents Consult your LD if you sense problems 9

10 Pre-Season - Identify Team Personnel Coaches - Two coaches of record (COR) + unlimited “practice” coaches - Maximum of 4 adults in dugout - Identify CORs to LD by 3/21/16 Team Parent - Vital part of your staff - Meeting 3/17/16 – each team required to send rep Pre-season field prep - Encourage parent involvement, teen volunteers - Begins 3/5 and runs every weekend to Opening Day 10

12 Volunteer Background Checks REQUIRED Volunteer Forms due to League Directors – 3/21/16 Need volunteer forms for everyone you expect to be with players - On the field - In the dugout - Includes practice coaches Safety Officer publishes list of cleared persons Those without a background check or unsuccessful background checks may not be on field (LD will advise) 12

13 Other Pre-Season Responsibilities Equipment - Pick up or have a designated representative pick up on 3/5/16 - Make up date 3/12 - Instruct/advise players regarding proper and required use Protective Cup mandatory for male catchers Helmet at all times during batting (even if tee hitting) Contact sponsor - introduce yourself 13

14 Call Up List Due to LD by 3/26/16 A managers identify up to three players who can play at AA level. Clear with parent Provide list to League Directors - LDs forward list to VP of Baseball Operations - VP forwards to higher-level LDs, who control call ups by delegation from Player Agent - VP also sends list to Player Agent for forwarding to Little League International - AA Managers will be provided a list of A level players from League Directors 14

16 Practices Frequency - Be judicious scheduling extra practices - Be sensitive to player (and parent) burnout Fields - Permits required - Generally one per week - Should not practice on field not approved by the BOD Safety Community relations 16

17 Good Planning = Good Practices Have a written plan and agenda Safety always a primary focus - Short term: proper equipment, safe procedures - Protective cup at all times for catchers - Helmets during all hitting drills - Long term: avoid overuse or bad technique that can lead to injury - Proper hydration Use stations to keep players moving and engaged Use coaching tools to learn and teach proper technique Emphasize and repeat proper throwing and catching mechanics 17

19 Pre-game routine Pre-Game warm-ups (on field) - Each team allotted 20 minutes - Visiting team first on the field for warm-ups - Playing field cleared 10 minutes prior to game time for field preparation, pre-game conference, etc. Check uniforms and player apparel - Alterations not permitted to uniforms/helmets (e.g., decals) - Shirts tucked in - No jewelry (includes cloth and rubber bracelets and earrings) - Nothing distracting on player’s hands or wrists. Field Preparation - Home team is responsible for lining and grooming field - Visiting team responsible for setting up pitching machine (A only) 19

20 Game Administration Game clock runs from scheduled time, not start time, unless delayed by prior game or weather Keep the game moving - Assign COR to focus on defensive assignments - Communicate to players in advance (post where they can see) - No huddles between innings 20

21 Post Game Field maintenance – home team responsible Provide game write ups - Instructions on website - Write up should highlight players by name - Share the wealth when it comes to mentioning players 21

22 Weather Issues Lightning or thunder – clear the field at first visual or audible indication of a storm Game delays or cancellations - Emphasize to parents; if they hear nothing, report to the field - Encourage use of Rainedout.com - Check the website Make Up Games - First available date - Often the very next Sunday - Manager availability not a consideration 22

23 Field Care Proper and regular care is critical to field quality, everyone needs to do their part Leave the field in better shape than you found it - Rake base paths toward bag and plate - Repair the mound - If Gray Hat does not drag field with tractor, use manual drag to restore the infield dirt - Line fields with smallest width setting, 2-inch, not 4-inch - Empty the trash cans in dugout and at field Recruit, assign and educate parent volunteers 23

28 In Season and End of Season Report accident and injuries to the Safety Officer Player Evaluations - Primary and fundamental managerial duty for A managers - Submit electronically at end of season - Be frank, but kind in your choice of words - Confidential: WSLL uses utmost care in guarding these evaluations - Critical tool in the AA draft the following spring 28

29 Parent Evaluations Managers: - Provide notice when evaluation application is posted - Encourage all parents to provide honest feedback - Give follow up reminders regarding due date Return rates are 65-70% Feedback used to identify: - Areas of sensitivity and pervasiveness of those issues - Specific areas to emphasize in manager training and preparation - Level of satisfaction with league functions and services - Concerns that folks may be hesitant to express in a more public or direct forum 29
