3 Overview of the PE premium £150 million ring fenced till 2020 to support delivery of PE and sport in primary schools Schools with primary-aged pupils will receive the primary PE and sport premium for the 2015 to 2016 academic year on the same basis as last year. First instalments will be paid to local authorities on behalf of local-authority-maintained schools on 29 October 2015 and to academies on 2 November 2015. focus should be on Raising whole school standards Improving teacher confidence and competence Funding allocated to schools through a formula, Funding allocated through a lump sum for each school. Typical primary school with 250 pupils to receive £9,250 each year Ofsted priority when assessing overall provision Schools to publish details of their provision on their websites Schools accountable for spend

4 4 To improve the quality of existing PE teaching through continuing professional development in PE for generalist, so that all primary pupils improve their health, skills and physical literacy and have a broader exposure to a range of sports To increase participation levels in competitive sport and healthy activity of pupils and maintain these into adolescence Schools understand and value the benefits of high quality PE and sport, including its use as a tool for whole school improvements To increase the quality of initial teacher training in PE and sport and to promote PE specialisation in the primary workforce Vision

5 Objectives To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils increased participation in competitive sport 5

6 6 How to use the PE and sport premium Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means that you should use the premium to: develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years For example, you can use your funding to: hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs Change4Life run sport competitions increase pupils’ participation in the School GamesSchool Games run sports activities with other schools You should not use your funding to: employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements - these should come out of your core staffing budgets teach the minimum requirements of the national curriculum - including those specified for swimming (or, in the case of academies and free schools, to teach your existing PE curriculum).

7 Develop your understanding of what high quality PE looks like and the impact it can have on whole school outcomes Work with the PE Co-ordinator to develop an understanding of the quality of PE within your school Regularly scrutinise the current and projected expenditure of the PE and Sport Premium funding with the head teacher and understand the impact it is making Is the spend and impact on your website? 7 How can a Governing body help

The information should include; The amount of grant received How it has, or will be, spent What impact the school has seen on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment 9 Website guidance from DfE

10 What will Ofsted inspectors look for in a Section 5 inspection 10 Senior leaders, subject leaders and governors know the amount of funding available to the school and the reasons why it is given An audit of current needs is undertaken so that any deficiencies can be met by the funding. A clear action plan for improvement with time scales and measurable out comes. Governors involvement in the decision making process and monitoring/evaluation of the outcomes of the plan- holding school leaders to account. 11 All primary schools should have effective development plans to improve provision and outcomes in and through PE, physical activity and school sport Employ expert advice to evaluate the school’s current strengths and weaknesses in PE and sport All primary schools to have a PE coordinator All primary schools to build PE and sport into whole school plan to underpin school standards 11 Priorities for individual schools
