2 What is the GA? Strength through Association as a community of practice – Drawing from the authority of its membership and primarily serving its members (dissemination) in a learning society – Independent critical voice, local and national projects, certificated professional development opportunities (creation)

3 What is the GA? Membership Services –Journals –Discounts –Conferences –Website Publications –Handbooks –Specialist materials Projects –Teacher-led curriculum development

4 What is the core mission? “To further the learning and teaching of geography” Therefore, teaching geography within the context of geography education is the GA’s main concern. That is, ‘subject leadership’

5 A key network The GTE is perhaps your key professional network. It is supported by the GA – the GA and the GTE intersect and share the same concerns The GA is your students’ key network. They should be expected to join, and we should expect them to remain members.

6 The TDA The TDA recognises the significance of the specialist subject community of practice –GTE funding –GTIP –TTRB

7 The GA is an independent, unincorporated association. Its core functions are to support the teaching and learning of geography. Its strength comes from its membership. www.geography.org.uk
