3 An overview Egypt is a country located primarily in North Africa with the Sinai Peninsula forming a land bridge in Western Asia. Egypt is one of the most heavily populated country in Africa and the Middle East. Egypt has some of the world most legendary monuments and is renowned for its ancient civilization. Egypt is commonly regarded as a key political and cultural nation of the Middle East.

4 Egypt’s Kings and Queens The respected title of pharaoh, or king, traditionally referred to a man. However, women such as Hatshepsut have ruled Egypt. Hatshepsut declared herself pharaoh of Egypt in 1503 B.C.

5 Egyptian Religion “You will live again. You will live forever. Behold, you will be young forever.” These words were chanted by the priest while the royal family mourn the death of their beloved pharaoh after 100 days of preparing the body. The Egyptians believed in an afterlife – life after death. They believe that if the bodies were preserved, or made into mummies, the spirit would exist in the afterlife.

7 Religion: A way of Life Religion played a vital role in the daily life of the people of Ancient Egypt. It was used to explain everything that happened in nature: drought, sickness, death, etc., There were many gods and goddesses in Egypt with each having its own temple. The chief god of Ancient Egyptians was Amon-Re. They believed that he protected the rich and the poor.

8 Pyramids Tomb building became an art in Egypt. The pharaohs of the Fourth Dynasty built the largest and most famous tombs. They were called pyramids.

9 Social Classes 1. The Pharaoh was at the top of the Egyptian society. 2. Next was a small upper class – priest, members of pharaoh’s court 3. The middle class – merchants, skilled workers came after. 4. Peasants were at the bottom - the largest group.
