Employer Engagement Dave Lomas Physiotherapy

Placement practice Students are required to complete a placement to a high standard in order to qualify and practice (1000 hours) How is this achieved against a background of variable provider engagement Some providers are fantastic and supportive others more challenging Variation can exist across a number of components induction, assessment, feedback, models of supervision, support for struggling students & evaluation

Drivers to facilitate engagement SHU initiatives Commissioners and Local education & training boards Professional bodies and PSRB (HCPC)

Providers as co designers Timing, duration, and number Ax criteria are co designed. balanced against any PSRB requirements Employer involvement : Ax aligned to their needs ?

Support resources for providers Provision of accredited supervisor training - new & experienced Enhance communications :dedicated team of placement visitors (10), dedicated admin support, ease of access to supporting documentation policies and procedures via a web site Placement Website

Supervision models and SLA's A flexible approach. No evidence that any model of supervision is superior to another in terms of learning gain/ skill development, its more about the student so: team supervision, 1:1,1:2, 2:1 reduces anxiety Various attempts at service level agreements, non have ben realistic (39 x 0.75x No of qualified staff) Currently agreed 1.5 students/year/supervisor Numbers are an allocation, not a request - EM or Y&H Also supported by HCPC SETs and professional responsiblities.

Experience & Evaluation Facilitating this is one thing however: It is the learning gain from this experience that is most important meaningful/brief-reflection-debrief/ accredited/low stakes/portfolio/effective reflection This enhances CPD and career prospects

Giving something back Student's are required to evaluate the supervisor & placement Evaluations for employers act as evidence both for CPD and as an indicator of quality can be F2F or anonymous Linked to HCPC SET's Students are encouraged to make a contribution to the employers by the end of the placement

Annually Different platforms for different commissioners: In general: equality & diversity, teaching learning & assessment, Learning environment resources, quality processes are agreed between providers and SHU any action plans and reviews agreed between providers and SHU Audit

When good placements go bad: Agreed policy and procedures. Supervisor or student can initiate. Encouraged to do this early and use the Ax criteria as a trigger Early and possibly more frequent visits Areas of concern (danger of failure) linked to the Ax criteria. Reduces subjectivity. Set objectives with agreed timescales that are reviewed. Objectives can be simply lifted from documentation on the website

When good placements go bad Students concern triggers early intervention agreed process starting with separate discussions feeding into 3 party discussion possibly ending in an official complaint In both cases these are facilitated by ease of access to resources SHU placement policies and guidance
