2 Tayside Tayside is made of up 3 areas Angus The City of Dundee Perth and Kinross 390,000 people live in the region ageing population –co morbidities Requirement for skilled, appropriately trained sustainable workforce -welfare reforms -youth unemployment

3 Employability Services History In 2006, Tayside NHS Board recognised:- the link between health and employment need for a focussed and sustainable method of supporting the population into employment social responsibility as largest employer in Tayside need for socially responsible recruitment to care services within the area served by NHS Tayside Need for robust partnership working

4 Services provided by NHS Tayside Acute Medical, Surgical and Emergency services Care of the Elderly Community Health Partnerships Mental Health and Learning Disability Services Allied Health Professions Administrative and Clerical Services Property and Estates Services Engineers Plumbers Joiners Electricians Support Services Domestic Laundry Catering

5 Target Group Individuals from all social and cultural backgrounds, particularly those who have experienced barriers to training and employment Referred through Job Centre Plus

6 Pre employment programme development challenges 2006 Ongoing Sustainable Funding Course to reflect required care skills at entry grade level Placement identification and retention Negotiating Guaranteed Interview Validation from NHS Tayside Board Validation from Staff Side Establishing service level agreements for health check Establishing Disclosure Processes Uniforms!

7 Short course format Pre Course Preparation for education College Mandatory skills in line with NHS Tayside requirements Relevant Certification Care values Preparation for Employment Placements Students experience 3 separate placements of 4 days in clinical and non clinical NHS Tayside departments On successful completion of the course, guaranteed interviews for appropriate jobs within the organisation for a period of 6 months, in line with the funding agency tracking period.

8 Ongoing Challenges PVG OHSAS appointments Uniforms – distribution and laundry Confidentiality Information to placement providers Pastoral care for students Recognising issues around numeracy and literacy Attendance including travel

9 Essential to successful delivery Dedicated NHS Team to develop the programme within the NHS Academic Component delivered by dedicated College staff Jobcentre Plus providing referrals to the course Dundee City Council delivering Discover Learning Skills Development Scotland delivering– Career Essentials Clear and accountable processes reviewed at each operational meeting. 2 operational meetings per cohort Operational information taken to a larger steering group Focus on employment Provision of outcomes and statistics to all partners Complete commitment from all
