2 Creating your Mendeley Library Create a folder Search references within the Mendeley website Add a PDF Add a folder of PDFs Drag and drop PDFs in Mendeley Desktop Import/export to and from other reference management software Add reference manually Watch folders to automatically add PDFs to Mendeley Desktop

3 Folders By default you have the following folders: “All Documents” – contains everything in your library “Recently Added” – contains recent document added in your library “Favourites” – document that needs to be read later. You can add them to the folder by clicking the star next to reference “Needs review” –documents with incomplete details, which may require manual verification “My publications” – contains authored documents that appear on your profile “Unsorted” – documents which have not been added to any collections in your library

4 Create a folder You can create a folder on Mendeley desktop to organize your files

5 MALARIA AND TANZANIA You can also search references within the Mendeley website. In Mendeley Web click the Papers tab and perform a search. Save reference to library. Within the search results, just click either Save PDF to library or Save reference to library.

6 If you want to have access to your PDFs from anywhere, activate the Sync Library feature from Mendeley Desktop. By enabling this feature you are able to access your PDF files in your Mendeley Web library. Note: Always use the Sync Library in Mendeley Desktop every time you use the Mendeley Web to add references to your library.

7 Exercise 1 1. Log in to your Mendeley Web account then click the Papers tab. 2. In the search box, search for the article: Care-seeking patterns for fatal malaria in Tanzania. 3. Save it to your library. 4. Open your Mendeley Desktop and click Sync Library. The article should be displayed.

8 In Mendeley Desktop, click Add Documents, browse to the location of the pdf and click the Open button.

9 Click Add Folder, browse to the location of the folder. Then click the OK button.

10 All PDFs have been added to your library. Two were added. Mendeley will attempt to automatically detect the document details (bibliographic data). Any documents whose details Mendeley is uncertain about will be added to the Needs Review section for manual verification.

You may use Mendeley’s Document details lookup (CrossRef, PubMed, and ArXiv) or Google Scholar Search to complete missing document details

13 Exercise 2 1.Download the following article and save to your desktop: An analysis of malaria in pregnancy in Africa. 2. Drag and drop the pdf file in the Reference section of your Mendeley Desktop. 3. Review the details of the article before clicking the button - Details are Collect.

14 Export and Import to and from other reference management software Import/export EndNote, BibTeX and RIS libraries EndNote Mendeley In EndNote™: 1. Select File Export 2. Choose “XML” type and “RIS” as output style 3. Give your library a name and save it on your PC Then in Mendeley: 1. Select File Add Files 2. Choose the XML file that you have previously exported from EndNote™ and click on “Open” 3. Your EndNote™ library will appear in Mendeley Desktop

15 Exercise 3 – Import data from endnote EndNote desktop Select the references that you want to import into Mendeley Desktop, and click File > Export... In the window that appears, there is a box labeled 'Files of type:', in that box select 'XML (*.xml)' Choose a name for the file and click the 'Save' button Mendeley Desktop Click File > Add Files Select the file which you exported from EndNote and click Open

16 Exercise 3 – Import data from endnote EndNoteWeb export any of your references. Click Format – Export references. Choose RefMan (RIS) Export as the export style then click Save. You can use EndNoteWeb in HINARI http://www.who.int/hinari You need password and username Mendeley Desktop Click File > Add Files Select the file which you exported from EndNote and click Open

17 Add Entry manually enables you add references to Mendeley Desktop by completing a dialog box.

18 Exercise 4 1. In Mendeley Desktop, click File - Add Entry Manually. 2. Select Book and enter the following: Title: Plant Anatomy Author: A. Fahn Publisher and publication date: Pergamon Press, 1982 3. Click Save.

19 Use Watch folders to automatically add PDFs to Mendeley Desktop. When you place a document in a watched folder, it will be automatically added to Mendeley.

20 Web Importer - import references with a single click from a wide range of databases To install it, click Tools – Install Web Importer.

21 Review the details of the reference And click Save. You can also add references and edit & manage your library online

22 Exercise 5 1.Install the Web Importer in your Mendeley Desktop by clicking Tools – Install Web Importer and then follow the succeeding instructions. 2.Go to PubMed and type: HIV/AIDS Tanzania in the search box. 3. Click Import to Mendeley. 4.Import the first 3 articles by clicking Import. 5.Click Sync Library to display the exported articles to your Mendeley Desktop.
