MODULE 6 Expressway Driving AliciaAlisonElizabeth

CHARECTERISTICS OF AN EXPRESSWAY 1.Controlled Access 2.High Speeds 3.Divided by a barrier or median 4.Multiple Lanes 5.Only for motorized vehicles

MERGING When the speed increases on an expressway, steering input to maneuver decreases. When you are merging on an expressway: accelerate to blend with the speed of traffic on the expressway and be sure to check rear and left rear zones. If you are being tailgated (when someone is right behind you) speed up or let them pass you.

INTERCHANGES Cloverleaf Diamond Trumpet Frontage Road

SIGNS Interstate sign Merge HOV diamond Merging traffic sign

Expressway Entrances Three parts of expressway entrance: 1.Acceleration Lane 2.Entrance ramps 3.Merge area Look for two things when approaching expressway ramp: 1.Signs 2.Other cars

CHANGING LANES The purpose of the acceleration lane is to adjust to speed. You should not STOP in a lane for any reason, pull over first. Reasons to change lanes: 1.Entering or exiting 2.Allowing another driver to enter 3.Passing 4.Lane ahead becomes blocked

EXPRESSWAY LANES There is an enter/exit lane The right lane is for heavier and slower vehicles and vehicles getting ready to enter or exit the expressway The middle lane is for long distance or passing The left lane is for higher speeds and passing traffic Entering traffic always yields to the exiting traffic

HIGH SPEED CONSIDERATIONS If you miss your exit, you should keep going. U-TURNS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON AN EXPRESSWAY! Beware of highway hypnosis, which is dullness or drowsiness that can occur when driving long distances –To combat this, you can plan breaks and break at rest stops “Ramp metering” is used to control large volumes of traffic entering expressways, uses a system of lights and sensors, and allows only a few cars at a time to enter congested limited access
