THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR By The Very Rev. Dr. Sunday Ola. Onadipe Director of Admin, MCN Presented During Students’ Week 2014 at MTI, Sagamu

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR 1. THE GIFT OF ADMINISTRATION The gift of administration is the special ability that God gives to some members of the Body of Christ to understand clearly the immediate and long-range goals of a particular unit of the Body of Christ and to devise and execute effective plans for the accomplishment of those goals. Pastors who have gift of administration can make a church organization a hum. They enjoys long hours in the office, oversee the business matters of the church, relate to staff, close deals, dictate letters and take satisfaction in their organization. But pastors who do not have this gift or enjoy any of the above need not despair. In small churches, God may have given gift of administration to men and women who would love to exercise them as a contribution to the church. Sometimes, God provides a church secretary who has the gift to cover up. In large churches, a skilled assistant is often added to the church.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR 2.BIBLICAL BACKGROUND FOR THE GIFT OF ADMINISTRATION. Read Genesis 47: 13-15, 41, 47-49 (Joseph as an Administrator in Egypt); Ephesians 4: 11-12; 1 Corinthians 12: 27-28; 1 Corinthians 14: 40 (Divers Spiritual gifts); Luke 14: 28-30 (planning); Titus 1:5 (organisation). 3.DEFINITION OF CHURCH ADMINISTRATION Leadership and guidance in deploying the church’s limited resources for ministry are essential if there is to be optimum effectiveness. Church administration is the leadership which equips the church for mission. It is the guidance provided by church Pastors/Leaders as they lead the church to use its spiritual, human, physical, and financial resources to move the church toward reaching her objectives and fulfilling its avowed purpose. It is enabling the children of God to pursue the mission of God. Church administration may be described as a field in terms of certain functional areas in which Pastors/Leaders perform certain leadership functions.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR Why some Pastors disdain administration a)Faulty concepts of Church Administration b)Equating Church Administration with poor Administration c)Preferring “Spiritual” Things d)Rejecting “Executive Image” e)Unfortunate attitude toward Self and/or others f)Inflated Ego Problems g)Low Opinions of Others h)Hiding in “Busywork” i)Wanting to do everything j)Views of Persons and the Church.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR 4.BIBLICAL MODELS OF PASTORS AS ADMINISTRATOR There are several biblical models for church administration although none of them provides every detail needed for effective church administration. a)The Jethro-Moses Model (Exodus 18:13-27). Jethro prescribed an equipping ministry for Moses. b)Jesus’ Model of Equipping the Apostles (John 14: 12). He equipped them to do “greater things than I am doing. c)Paul espoused the equipping ministry approach (Acts 11: 19-26). Paul practiced and taught an equipping ministry. d) Apostles model (Acts 6: 1-7). Election of 7 servers. Though within the church some groups give Church Administration help services but could not preclude the work of a pastor as the chief administrator. Such groups include; Church staff members, Church officers, Church committees and Church members.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR 5.THE ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS OF A PASTOR We need to remind ourselves that to administer is simply to find the best ways and means to fulfill the mission of the church of preaching, teaching, winning souls, enlistment and utilization of people, development of people and meeting the felt needs of people within the scope of the church. The pastor as an administrator can perform the following functions in order to have a successful ministry. a)Planning:- Developing the Church ministry plans. He who fails to plan plans to fail. The pastor must develop planning skill in the following areas; basic operational planning, planning for advance (reach for new people to be brought to church, new ministries to develop, new needs to be met and plan for extraordinary improvement in quality, such as in training of workers, etc).

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR b)Designing church organization function:- It is not good organization that people resist. It is usually poor organization or too many organizations. Organization is the arrangement of persons to get a job done. A good design of church organization will distributes the workload unabashedly, places responsibility where it belongs, help avoid unnecessary duplication of effort. Good church organization will help do the following: reflect the church theology, lead toward clearly defined goals, group similar jobs together, match responsibility with authority, establish clear guidelines and keep congregational authority clear.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR c)Administering human resources function:- Human resources means people. Specialness of people as God considered them should be upheld to avoid treating people as “things”. Administering human resources involved recruitment of workers for specific positions with the help of recruitment sub-committee, provide pre-service training for potential leaders and workers, give specialized training for specific positions and continue development, evaluate work and recognize workers appropriately and discipline of erring worker, etc.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR d)Administering physical resources:- Four major groupings which call for administrative attention includes Curriculum development, supplies, properties, equipment/furniture/fittings. A church needs policies to guide the use of many of their physical resources. Also, preventive maintenance, repairs, housekeeping, and other routine actions are all important. A church property and building committee can give valuable assistance in administering the physical facilities. Security, financial, and legal protection are other areas of concern to the administrator.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR e)Administering financial resources:- Administering the financial resources of a church is a tremendous important part of effective leadership for pastor’s ministry. Good leadership regarding the church’s financial resources is indispensable part of the support system that enables a church to fulfill its purpose. Poor leadership in this area will hinder church’s effectiveness. Note that financial resources are the money, knowledge, skills, and attitudes and commitment which make available those human and physical resources needed to implement the ministries of the church. The pastor must develop a sincere administrative responsibilities regarding money in the following areas: develop adequate perspective about money, develop a budget, anticipate sources of income, secure commitment to support the budget, use orderly plans for receiving the money, systematize counting and banking, use standard procedures for requisitioning, disbursing, purchasing and reporting appropriately to the church.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR 6.OTHER SKILLS THAT ENHANCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PASTOR AS AN ADMNINISTRATOR It is very necessary to mention the following skills that will help the administrative effectiveness of a pastor. These include; planning, initiating, promoting, organizing, delegating, directing, motivating, supervising, performing, influencing, controlling, evaluating, communicating, and representing. These are among the management functions. A pastor as a leader can also draw his strength from the following sources; capability, faithful commitment, integrity, tensile strength and the Lord. __________________ Charles A. Tidwell, Church Administration Effective leadership for ministry, 1985.

THE PASTOR AS AN ADMINISRATOR 7.CONCLUSION Pastors/leaders are God’s gifts to the church. Pastors as administrators bring with them certain abilities and gifts. These gifts are to be developed and used for the purpose of the church. Church pastor/administrator has to earn their followings by exercising effective leadership skills.
