Standards Slides for Resident and Family Sessions

Five standards have been identified for discussion with you Each standard has specific questions to discuss We will work through each standard in the time available If we run out of time, you may wish to complete an online survey to answer the questions we didn’t discuss – Survey information will be given at the end of the meeting 4 Let’s get started…

Is it important that personal choice services like hairdressing, manicures, etc. are available where you live? Yes or No? Please tell us why they are important to you OR why they are not important to you? 5

Is it important that social and leisure activities are provided where you live? Yes or No? Please tell us why they are important to you OR why they are not important to you. 6

Currently how do you provide your input on your needs and preferences regarding food services? – How often are you asked for your input? – Would you like to be asked more often? If yes, how often? 7

Tell us what you like most about meal times – Is there anything that you would like to see changed to improve meal times? If yes, please tell us what you would like to see changed. – If the menu for the day has to change for a particular reason, are you notified of the change? If so, how are you notified? 8

What things help you feel safe and secure where you live? Think about locks on doors, security systems, staff knowing your whereabouts? Are there other things that should be done in all settings to make residents feel safer? Yes or No? Please explain. 9

Thinking back to before you moved in to this residence, what information did you receive about the residence and the services that were available to you? What type of information was most helpful to you? Now that you live here, what type of information is important for you to have? How does your operator notify you when something important changes, (e.g. changes to the services that are offered)? 10

11 Your input will be put together with all of the other input received If needed, the Accommodation Standards may be updated based over the next few months, based on the collected input – The operator of your residence will be made aware, if updates are made, and can share that with you

12 An online survey is also available – Being conducted by Carol Blair and Associates Inc., a consulting firm that is helping with this review You are welcome to complete the survey as well, if you wish, at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SLALhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SLAL The same version works for everyone Completion Deadline: June 3, 2016

Ten standards have been identified for discussion with you Each standard has specific questions to discuss We will work through each standard in the time available If we run out of time, you may wish to complete an online survey to answer the questions we didn’t discuss – Survey information will be given at the end of the meeting 14 Let’s get started…

Should supportive living accommodations be required to offer either personal laundry services or access to personal laundry facilities? Yes or no, please explain. What would be the implications of such a requirement? 15

What personal choice services do you think have the greatest bearing on resident quality of life or overall accommodation experience? If you offer personal choice services, how specific should the standard be in considering and responding to resident needs and preferences? 16

Should all service providers, regardless of whether a contract is in place, be required to provide evidence that the contractor is qualified for the task, carries required insurance, adheres to all relevant legislation and agrees to protect the confidentiality of resident information? – What would be the impact of this requirement? – Would this requirement substantively improve safety and quality? 17

What aspects of social/leisure activities have the greatest bearing on resident quality of life or overall accommodation experience? – Should supportive living and long-term care operators be required to offer social or leisure activities? (right now this standard only applies if social/leisure activities are offered, they aren’t required) – What would the impact be of doing so? – Should the term ‘social or leisure activities’ be revised to ‘social or leisure opportunities’? How specific should the standard be in considering and responding to resident opinions? In other words: – Should a minimum timeframe be established for the collection of resident input and feedback or is ‘periodic’ sufficient? – Should family input be required, collected and considered as well? (i.e., when they are the voice of the resident) 18

Are there ways the standard needs to be improved to better balance food preferences expressed by residents while ensuring healthy and well balanced meals? Should the standard be expanded to enable other qualified professionals (e.g. Red Seal Chefs, nutritionists) to review and approve menus as meeting nutritional requirements? Yes or No. Please explain. 19

Overall, is there something that should be added to this standard to significantly enhance safety, quality and the overall dining experience? Are residents requesting and/or requiring special diets? Yes or No. Please explain. – If requested/required, what special diets are you able to accommodate? – What are the implications when you are not able to accommodate these requests/requirements? Where special diets are provided, what are some of the approaches used to train kitchen/food services staff? Consider the training content to be provided, the most appropriate trainers, type of training, etc. Where texture modified diets are accommodated, should there be a requirement for there to be a meal choice? – Should a texture modified diet be shown on the menu or otherwise communicated? Yes or no. Please explain. 20

Are the mechanisms listed in the standard appropriate for supporting resident safety and security on an around-the- clock basis? – Are there additions that could improve residents’ feelings of safety and security? Yes or no. Please explain. Given that safety and security must be in place for residents around-the-clock, in what ways are residents able to access the building after hours when the building is locked? 21

Is the standard sufficient as written for an applicant, resident and their representatives? Do applicants, residents and their representatives ask for information that is not listed in this standard? Yes or no. Please explain. – How is information made accessible to applicants, residents and their representatives before move in and/or after a significant change to content? – What information do you find to be most helpful to family members/representatives or residents when moving in to your residence? 22

As these standards apply more broadly than other legislated requirements (including Continuing Care Health Service Standards, infection prevention and control, food safety), are there any training needs that should be added for accommodation services staff (including housekeeping, maintenance, reception, laundry, food services, etc.)? What would be the implications be if the standards were expanded to specify minimum training requirements for accommodation staff? – If this was done, in what areas should the training focus and when should the training be done? 23

What are the implications of enhancing the Accommodation Standards to match the Continuing Care Health Service Standards? Is there something else besides a CRC that should be in place to ensure the safety and security of residents? 24

Is there anything else in the Regulation and Standards that impedes the delivery of quality accommodation/accommodation services? Is there any addition that you think would be important to make a substantive improvement to the quality of resident accommodation/accommodation services? 25

26 Your input will be put together with all the other input received If needed, the Accommodation Standards and Information Guide will be revised based on the input, and – Undergo a Legal review – Receive Ministerial approval The revised Accommodation Standards and Information Guide will then be implemented

27 An online survey is also available – Being conducted by Carol Blair and Associates Inc., a consulting firm that is helping with this review You are welcome to complete the survey as well, if you wish, at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SLALhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SLAL The same version works for everyone Completion Deadline: June 3, 2016
