Skills and Techniques: Learning skills and Feedback Lesson 11. “Everything is practice” Pele – Brazilian footballer. 3 times World cup winner

By the end of this lesson pupils should be able to….. Describe how performers learn skills Describe the difference between whole- part-whole and gradual build up. Explain the importance of feedback in SGPE

Skills and Techniques Learning skills involves considering methods of practice and how best to practice. Think about a golfer practising. Why will they repeat the same shot many times????

Skills and Techniques She is attempting to make the movement ‘automatic’…………. What are the advantages of being able to perform a skill automatically? She will be able to perform the skill the same every time. So when she is under pressure… she will hit that perfect drive…….right down the middle

Learning skills When thinking about learning or practicing our skills and techniques you need to remember 2 main terms…… Whole – Part – Whole AND Gradual Build-Up

Skills and Techniques There are 2 main ways to learn skills 1.Whole – Part – Whole..........normally used for safe, easy skills [simple] or where a performer can already perform the skill. 2.Gradual build up...........used where a skill is difficult or dangerous [complex] and needs to be learned in stages

Whole – Part – Whole Examples Swimming: Front crawl. W: Your teacher/coach may ask you to perform the full stroke. P: Then he/she will give you a float and you will concentrate on your leg kick. W: Then – back to the full stroke to see if you have improved.

Whole – Part – Whole Examples Volleyball: Spike W: Your teacher/coach will ask you and your team-mates to play a full game P: Then he/she will focus on practicing your spike in isolation. Could be on your own or with a partner. W: Then – back to a full game to look for improvements

Gradual Build-Up Used for learning complex (difficult) skills. For example: diving (swimming) or a round-off (gymnastics). By using gradual-build up, we can make the practice more demanding in small steps: This allows us to develop confidence.

Gradual Build-Up Examples Activity: Basketball: Lay-up When you first start playing basketball, the lay-up can a complex or difficult skill to perform. So when learning the lay-up we can break the skill down…. Stage 1: standing under the basket and shooting with one hand Stage 2: one step lay-up Stage 3: one bounce then lay-up Stage 4: more run up and drive in Stage 5: 1v1 scoring with a lay-up

Gradual Build-Up Examples Activity: Diving Complex and dangerous activity/skill. We can break it down: Stage 1 : sitting dive Stage 2: kneeling dive Stage 3: standing dive at side of pool Stage 4: low, spring board low down Stage 5: higher spring board Stage 6: top level at Commonwealth pool!!!

Skills and Techniques Task – 1.Name a skill or technique and explain how it can be learned using Whole – Part – Whole. 1.Name a skill or technique and explain how it can be learned using gradual build up.

Feedback When learning a skill or performing in an activity the participant often wants to know how well he/she is doing. Getting information back about your performance is known as Feedback. Feedback should ALWAYS be positive. This information can reach you in different ways

Feedback Internal……..How you yourself felt about your performance. The feel of that perfect drive in golf……….sweet hit………..

Feedback External…….This is when you are told by your coach (by conversation, written comment or by video), by the reaction of the spectators or by your team-mates.

Feedback Task: answer true or false to the following statements: Receiving feedback immediately after your performance is best. Positive feedback on a few key points works well. You receive internal feedback during your performance. Negative feedback about what you are doing WRONG will help you learn.
