Make summary about the pattern of the L use in the community. 3. Description of the community’s norms. 4. Is a basis for comparing pattern of code choice in different speech community. 5. Useful for the newcomer in a community as a summary

19 DIGLOSSIA – P:27  A Linguistic Division of Labour: In some countries many codes are used.  Local- standard (as in Aargau) P: 27 –example 6

20 What DIGLOSSIA Types?  Has 2 Senses:  Narrow Sense  Original Sense What are Diglossia دقلوشيا main features? 1) 2 Language are used in one community one regards as (H) and the other regards as (L) code

21  2) each Language used in a different(distinct) functions- but both H& L compliment each other  3) No one uses H variety in everyday conversation

22 Narrow (classic) sense definition:  Eg. Arabic speaking countries use classical Arabic as H variety  And regional colloquial as L variety  In Europe Middle Ages (H)was Latin beside its daughters language as (Italian- French- Spanish)  Both varities are are linguistically related to each other

23 But  The differences come from different pronunciation bw H and L codes  The Grammar of H is more complicated
