Google Search “The Colossus of Rhodes.” What was it? Why was it important? Find a picture of it. Does it remind you of anything we have in the US? Be prepared to talk about what you learned about it.

Colossus of Rhodes

The New Colossus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!“ -Emma Lazarus

***Gift from France in 1886 to commemorate 100 years of American Independence. ***Started a copper color-turned turquoise after 25 years in the elements.

On the first day of January, Eighteen Ninety-Two, They opened Ellis Island and they let the people through. and the first to cross the threshold of that Isle Of Hope And Tears, was Annie Moore from Ireland who was only fifteen years. Chorus: Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears, Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fear, but it's not the Isle you left behind. that Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pain, Isle you'll never see again but the Isle of Home is always on your mind.

In a little bag she carried all her past and history, and her dreams for the future in the Land of Liberty. And courage is the passport when your old world disappears but there's no future in the past when you're fifteen years When they closed Down Ellis Island in Nineteen Forty-Three, Seventeen Million people had come there for sanctuary. And in springtime when I came here and I stepped onto its piers, I thought of how it must have been when you're fifteen years. -Traditional song sung by Celtic Woman

Large Immigrant Groups Irish, Russians, and Italians to big cities Germans to the mid-western states Scandinavians to farm/agricultural areas As today, many of the immigrants adopted intensive labor jobs. Many helped build sky scrapers, worked in factories and ship yards for low wages. Also like today, many immigrants faced prejudice and had to incorporate themselves into a new society. BUT…America DID prove to be a land of opportunity for some.

Modern Application Ellis Island no longer functions as a “Golden Gate” to freedom and opportunity in America. It now functions as a museum and memorial. Immigration is a “HOT TOPIC” of today. Should the US still protect the “huddled masses yearning to be free? Should we who owe so much of our success to immigrants close our borders against emigration? How should immigration now work in our country???
