Interim Assessment Information Hope Allen Director of Assessment 4/12/15

“It is essential to ensure that every assessment is used for an important purpose and leads to actions intended to improve student learning.” Student Assessment Inventory for School Districts, 4.0 Achieve, 2014 http://www.achieve.org/files/AchieveStudentAssessmentInventory.pdf http://www.achieve.org/files/AchieveStudentAssessmentInventory.pdf

ADE Requirements O Are schools required to have an interim assessment program? O No, there is not a state requirement for schools to have an interim program. O Which program is the best program to use? O There are many programs that offer valid and reliable results. A school must identify the purpose before choosing a program.

Assessments O All assessments are designed for an intended purpose. O Assessments provide the data that drives instruction. O “As assessment data are gathered, the teacher is able to plan instruction that responds to learners’ specific needs.” Reutzel and Cooter (2011)

O What do you want to accomplish by using class time to give an interim assessment? O Do all classes have the same need? O Does the assessment support your overall academic program? O How do you currently/intend to use the data?

Diagnostic O Assesses a student’s strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction

Formative O Assesses a student’s performance during instruction, and occurs regularly throughout the instruction process O “…a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve student acheivement of intended instructional outcomes” FAST SCASS 2016

Interim O Evaluates student performance at periodic intervals, frequently at the end of a grading period. O Can predict student performance on end-of- year summative tests. O May be teacher made or purchased from a vendor. O Adaptive, cumulative, growth measure

Question Should I give more than one type of interim assessment? O Depending on your purpose, you may consider different programs. It is recommended to make the best use of instructional time by focusing on quality teaching of the standards. Any assessment given should provide data that is used to guide this instruction and make decisions about student learning.

Assessment Inventory O http://www.achieve.org/assessmentinvento ry http://www.achieve.org/assessmentinvento ry O Can be used to take a closer look at local programs and the time spent on assessment.

Bottom Line O Districts must identify the purpose for which they are assessing and find/develop a product that meets that need.

ACT Aspire Periodic ClassroomInterim Summative

Aspire Interim Purpose O Designed to be used as part of a comprehensive instructional program to check for student understanding at a point in time O Same skills are assessed on each interim with new questions O Used to show growth over time

How should the Aspire interim assessments be used?  To assess how students are performing on a set of skills as defined by ACT Aspire  http://actaspire.avocet.pearson.com/actaspire/home#7 327 http://actaspire.avocet.pearson.com/actaspire/home#7 327  Not a practice test  Multiple choice only  Not inclusive of every skill on summative  Should not be used for a grade

Aspire Classroom Purpose O Designed to be used as part of a comprehensive instructional program to check for student understanding of specific standards O Each classroom assessment is aligned to two or three standards O Used to assess specific skills

How should the Aspire classroom assessments be used?  To assess where students are performing on a set of skills as defined by ACT Aspire  http://actaspire.avocet.pearson.com/actaspire/home#622 8 http://actaspire.avocet.pearson.com/actaspire/home#622 8  Not a practice test  Multiple choice only  Not inclusive of every skill on summative  Can be used as formative assessment to give immediate feedback  Could be used for a grade, but may not be best practice

Requirements  Non- certified staff may administer periodic assessment  Only students taking the summative may take the periodic assessments  Students must test on grade level only

Requirements  To be administered under secure conditions  Teachers are not to look over students’ shoulders  Students are to take the test on their own  Must follow instructions in manual  Teachers can access questions after the administration via the portal  Questions are not to be reproduced/copied/screenshot in any way  Teachers may display the questions for review on the board via a projector from the portal report AFTER the test has been taken by students
