Moor You Ask? In the 10th Century Cordoba, for example, was not just the capital of Al Andalus (Moorish Spain) but also one of the most important cities in the world, rivalling Baghdad and Constantinople. It boasted a population of 500,000 (200,000 more than now) and had street lighting, fifty hospitals (with running water!), three hundred public baths, five hundred mosques and seventy libraries – one of which held some 500,000 books. All of this, at a time when London had a largely illiterate population of around 20,000 and had forgotten the technical advances of the Romans some 600 hundred years beforehand. In the 10th Century Cordoba, for example, was not just the capital of Al Andalus (Moorish Spain) but also one of the most important cities in the world, rivalling Baghdad and Constantinople. 6 Regardless… Venetian racism in this play largely contributes to Othello’s personal struggles. People appreciate his loyalty to Venice and his military accomplishments, but he better not marry their daughters: “I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs. You'll have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse; You'll have your nephews neigh to you. ”

The Symbolic Settings: Civilization Wilderness

The Symbolic Settings: Othello takes place in Venice (in northern Italy) and Cyprus (an island in the eastern Mediterranean about forty miles south of present- day Turkey). The time is between 1489 and 1571.

The Symbolic Settings: Cyprus–as a strategically located island which yielded substantial harvests of olives, grapes and various grains–was much prized throughout its history. Assyrians, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, and Byzantines all fought over and occupied it. England’s King Richard I, the Lion-Hearted, conquered Cyprus in 1191 but later ceded it to the French. Venice seized the island in 1489 and in 1571 the Ottoman Turks brought Cyprus under its control.

Moor important, and interesting, though, are our human relationships… Whom do you trust?
