Sui, Tang, & Song Dynasties (c. 600 – 1200s)  Golden Ages Advancements in art, science, math, inventions, technology, and trade Created the Grand Canal (linked northern and southern China for trade, especially rice) Invented gunpowder, the compass (which increased trade and exploration), improved silk and porcelain production, invented paper money Strongly patriarchal – women’s foot binding  to restrict the movement and freedom of wealthy women in order to protect family fortunes and show off that wealthy men’s wives didn’t have to work

Mongol Rule (1200s-1400s) Mongol rule (1200s - 1400s)  Adapted to harsh dry environment, semi-nomadic lifestyle  Superior military tactics (Expert horse riders + Expert archers + gunpowder tactics + terrorizing populations = Largest continuous land empire in history)  Increased trade along Silk Roads (Pax Mongolica “Peace of Mongolia”)/Similar to “Pax Romana”  Mongols take over China (Yuan Dynasty)

Mongol Rule (1200s-1400s)  Marco Polo of Venice visited Mongol Emperor Kublai Kahn, led to increased trade with China  Mongols convert to and spread Islam throughout central and south Asia (into India)  Spread bubonic plague from China to Europe along trade routes  Mongol empire isolated Russia from Europe during the Renaissance

Ming Dynasty  Due to Bubonic Plague, Mongols retreat from China, Ming Dynasty wants to reassert Chinese dominance  Zheng He (Chinese Muslim explorer opened up trade routes to India, Africa, and the Middle East)  Advancements in shipbuilding and navigation, but ships recalled to deal with Mongol threat

6 IX. Qing Dynasty (1600s-1911)  Last dynasty  Tai Ping Rebellion (largest civil war in world history)  Opium War  Treaty of Nanking  Spheres of Influence  Boxer Rebellion  Lost the Mandate of Heaven (had been established before the Qin dynasty, during the Zhou Dynasty)
