Cancer Cells

Cell Review What kind of cell is this bacterial cell? What are the types of cells plants have?

Cell Review How do you see cells? Give the three parts of the cell theory. What is the “control center of the cell”? Where does protein synthesis occur? What is the job of the mitochondria in the cell? What surrounds and protects the cell from the outside environment?

Cell Review Plants have a nucleus and what else surrounding the outside of the cell? The largest part of the plant cell is called what? Ribosomes are made by what part of the cell? Ribosomes are where in the cell? Where does the cell make ATP? Where does photosynthesis happen in plants?

That reviews cells, but what else is there??? There are 2 types of cells and 1 that is cellular and different we have to talk about Those are cancer cells, stem cells and viruses Today we are talking about cancer cells

Cancer Cancer – a disorder in which body cells lose the ability to control growth Cancer cells don’t respond to the signals that regulate the growth of most cells As a result, they divide uncontrollably

Tumors Cancer causes tumors Tumor – a mass of cells formed by cancer Malignant Tumors – cancer cells that invade and destroy surrounding healthy tissue Benign Tumors – cancer cells that do not invade nor destroy surrounding healthy tissue

What causes cancer? Cancer is caused by defects in the genes that regulate and control cell growth and division Most have a defect in gene p53 p53 usually stops the cell cycle until all the chromosomes have been replicated If this gene stops, then cancer can start and cell growth stops and cells divide rapidly

Outside causes… Cancer can also be started by smoking, chewing tobacco, radiation exposure, or viral infection

Treating Cancer 1)Surgery – to remove the tumors 2)Radiation – to treat the cancer and kill it and good cells in the body 3)Chemotherapy – using chemicals to stop the cancer growth and kill the cells. Also can kill good cells in the process Cancer is a disease of the cell cycle and can affect all of us at any time
