2 Do now Answers Improperly grounded outlets can cause errors in a computer system that may not be immediately apparent from internal diagnostics. The outlet tester is a quick and easy way to test possible sources of errors, such as lockups and memory errors.

3 Do now Answers Digital multi-meters (DMMs) measure voltage and resistance in electrical circuits. Using a pair of pointed wire leads or probes, a technician can use digital multi-meters to touch wire contacts on electrical components or junctures and take measurements. The red probe is used on live wires and the black on the ground wire.

4 Lab Instructions & Safety precautions Do Not Disconnect any devices or plugs from your work station Never force the outlet tester into an outlet. Keep fingers away from bare tester prongs when inserting the outlet tester into an outlet. Working with electrical components requires strict attention to proper safety precautions. Check with the instructor before working with any live electrical circuits.

5 Lab Instructions & Safety precautions Your work area should be neat and orderly, with no loose wires or tools lying around which might come into contact with bare wires or create electrical shock hazards. Never touch a bare wire without checking to see if the wire contains a live current. Keep all liquids and cleaning solvents away from the area where the testing of a live electrical current is to take place. Check to see that the power source is disconnected prior to working with power leads or electrical devices.

6 General Info Clear your work area of all materials not required for the lab. Care and treatment of the Digital Multimeter: As with all testing equipment, proper care and maintenance will help ensure: safe operation of the test equipment, valid test results, and longer lasting equipment.

7 General Info Always keep the digital multimeter clean. When setting the digital multimeter down, be careful not to drop it or set it where solvents could come in contact with it. Check to see that the digital multimeter is turned off before putting it away.

8 General Info Measure the voltage of the power supply input and output. Check power supply leads and disconnected power cord for any cuts or bare wires that might create the danger of electrical shock.
