1 23-5:The impact of the New Deal INCREASE IN THE POWER OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INCREASE OF THE ROLE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PLAYS IN THE LIFE OF THE PEOPLE GROWTH OF EXECUTIVE POWER THE USE OF DEFICIT SPENDING AS A TECHNIQUE FOR MAINTAINING THE ECONOMIC HEALTH OF THE NATION CREATION OF A WELFARE STATE AND THE ACCEPTANCE THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE THE RIGHT OF WORKING PEOPLE TO ORGANIZE UNIONS TO ADVANCE THEIR ECONOMIC INTERESTS RENEWED INTEREST IN PRESERVING AND PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT MAJOR CONSTRUCTION AND INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE STILL WITH US TODAY SHOWED THAT DEMOCRACY IS CAPABLE OF RESPONDING TO MAJOR DISRUPTIONS AND HAS THE TOOLS TO REFORM ITSELF

2 Labor New Deal Laws/Agencies: Wagner Act and Fair Labor Standards Act National Labor Relations Board Lasting Effects on American Government and Life: Set standards for wages and hours; ban on child labor; rights to organize and bargain collectively Created under the Wagner Act, this agency continues to act as a mediator in disputes between unions and employers

3 Agricultural and rural life New Deal Laws/Agencies: Agricultural Adjustment Acts Soil Conservation Service Lasting Effects on American Government and Life: Aid to farmers; farm price supports Taught contour plowing, terracing and crop rotation

4 Banking and Finance New Deal Laws/Agencies: Securities and Exchange Commission Glass-Steagall Banking Act and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Lasting Effects on American Government and Life: Monitoring of the Stock Market and Federal enforcement of laws regarding the sale of stocks and bonds The FDIC created under the Glass-Steagall Banking Act provides insurance on bank accounts

5 Social Welfare New Deal Laws/Agencies: Social Security Act Lasting Effects on American Government and Life: Federal government's acceptance of some responsibility for the social welfare of its citizens. –Old-age insurance –Unemployment compensation –Aid to families with dependent children and the disabled

6 Environment New Deal Laws/Agencies: Civilian Conservation Corps, Soil Conservation Service, Taylor Grazing Act The Tennessee Valley Authority (provided hydroelectric power and flood control) Lasting Effects on American Government and Life: Provided programs to protect the nation’s natural resources including farmland; prevention of floods and dust storms, more national parks and wildlife refugees But the TVA also contributed to pollution by engaging in strip mining operations

7 Other Terms Deficit Spending = Spending more money than the government receives in revenue. In response to pressure from congress FDR in 1937 scaled back New Deal programs since they were costing the government more money than they were bring in and adding to the National Debt. Parity = a price that amounts to an equal or fair amount Under the second Agricultural Adjustment Act farmers stored their crops until prices reached parity- a price equal to what farmers had received between 1910-1914. Establishing price supports like these for farmers set a precedent of federal aid to farmers that continued into the 1990s.
