2 What does it mean to be Canadian?
What makes up Canada’s national identity? On a the blank piece of paper provided, write “Canada’s National Identity” and SILENTLY brainstorm all that comes to mind when you think of Canada’s identity.

4 The CBC Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Created as a radio station in 1936 Government operated and meant to get news and Canadian culture to all Canadians Went to TV as well in the 50’s First broadcast was Hockey Night in Canada of course! The Leafs lost!

5 The National Film Board (NFB)
NFB formed in 1938 At first the NFB helped bring films (including WW2 Propaganda to many parts of Canada) Was later used mostly to support Canadian film makers The Sweater is an excellent example of a film supporting Canadian culture – supported by the NFB

6 The Massey Commission 1949 The Massey Commission
Formed to look at protecting Canadian Culture from impact of US Recommended CBC go from Radio (1936) to Radio and Television

7 The Canada Council For the Arts
A response to the Massey Commission (1957) Many struggling artists could look to the Council for funding Helping Canadian Culture survive in the face of hollywood movies and US television

8 The CRTC The Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission
Licenses all radio and tv stations in Canada Ensures a certain amount of Canadian content on the airwaves Hedley on Sun FM! Also licenses cell phone companies
