 Our goal is to provide the safest environment in which to educate our children, raise our families and live healthy, productive lives now and in the future. C.L.E.A.N's primary focus is on the Parker Street Waste site.  Our mission is to improve the environmental quality of our community by building partnerships with community leaders, elected, appointed, and responsible officials.

 The “Parker Street Waste” site was the “dump” back in the 40's where the manufacturers were allowed to dispose of toxic chemicals. In 1970 it became home to the second largest high school in the state of Massachusetts, And recently a brand new Middle school. We have playing fields as well as public housing all within the boundary of the former dump.

 Clean has worked tirelessly to protect the public and all the visitors who come to our fields and go to our schools.  We along with our LSP's and supporters have overseen the Sampling Analysis Plan for the 11 areas within the Parker street site, frequently attending technical meetings with TRC, DEP,EPA and our LSP's.  We have put in long hours of endless meetings, Thousands pages of paper work and made personal sacrifices for the safety of our community, without asking or taking anything in return.

 We have demanded that the wetlands behind the Keith (currently one of the most highly toxic areas within the Parker Street Waste Site) be properly secured to protect the neighbor hood kids.  We demand that the city yard be tested  We have demanded the participation of the New Bedford Housing Authority to become involved in the communication and enforcement of their shared responsibilities.

 We have improved the communication lines to the public with our request for translators in every public meeting, along with our request for informative facts posted on the city's website in 2 different languages (Spanish and Portuguese). We have also succeeded in the city publishing a weekly schedule of work being done at Parker Street in the Standard Times.  We have been overseeing the progress of New Bedford High School and the many investigations and remediation's currently underway. We have made numerous request for further investigations to ensure the student and staffs safety, from air quality testing as a result of PCB laded material, to Asbestos removal, and currently the T.C.E found in the ground water that infiltrated the school. We also have focused on and requested the Little Whalers Day Care be further evaluated. We along with our LSP's we have accomplished the beginning steps of what is a scientific evaluation of the site for Vapor Intrusions and Dixon testing.

 We have gone door to door on many occasions to engage and inform our Neighbors about up coming meetings and the importance of their participation. We have also worked to provide an efficient source of communication to the Students and Parents.  The New Bedford Teachers Union and CLEAN have been working closely together to gather important DATA for the Massachusetts Public Health Department to consider for the current Health Study being investigated. The health affects have YET to be fully investigated, Clean undertook an informal investigation of staff who worked at the High School and released that data to the State Health department, Currently C.L.E.A.N has a list of 119 cancer cases.

 We have been in communication with many elected officials to ask for help and support for our community.  Clean asked for the E.P.A. to protect the private property owners and not make them responsible for the cost of testing and more importantly the clean up of immanent hazards found on there properties.

 Working on bringing the City of New Bedford and the housing authority to the same table to work with all agencies involved.  Wetlands Behind Keith as well as the source  City Yard testing  Time Tables for remediation  Source of TCE under the High School  Westlawn: remediation and plan of action for remediation  Private Property Owners tax abatements.  Remediation of remaining properties where a hazard to the property owners health exists/could exist

 EPA region 1 and the Mass DEP for listening and working with C.L.E.A.N and expanding the testing of private and public properties near and around the middle school, high school, and athletic fields. If it was not for both agencies working together then many people would still be in danger. Specifically we would like to thank Ira Leighton, Jim Owens, Steve Novac, Wing Chow, Marcus Homes,Jim Murphy, and Kelsey O’Neil, as well as the support staff who have contributed to getting us to this phase.  Dave Johnston and Molly Cote from the D.E.P for the time invested in making our community a better place.  These two agencies together have made substantial progress and our community, friends and children are grateful.

 We feel that our current progress would not be possible with out the work and dedication of two special people. Ian Phillips and Terrie Boguski. These two L.S.P’s have contributed to moving this site forward in a positive direction. Their expertise have benefited this city in a positive way forever. Ian and Terrie’s input have been accepted and implemented by both E.P.A. and D.E.P. for the benefit of the community. Words cant describe how grateful we are to both of them.
