1 Anglo-Russian Sports Contact Seminar 16-19 October 2007

2 Aim of the seminar To explore opportunities for UK-Russian co-operation in the field of young people’s sport

3 Seminar Objectives To discuss Russian and UK national and regional policies for the development and support of young people’s sport To exchange Russian and UK experience in the development of sports programmes for young people, both in-school and out-of- school To exchange Russian and UK experience in the development and support of sports partnerships between schools, between schools and the wider community To facilitate sports-focused partnerships between UK and Russian schools in region to region clusters To agree areas for further co-operation between other UK and Russian sports-related stakeholders

4 Breaking down barriers or Comparing education systems Who runs the school? What is the role of the Head teacher? What is the teaching style? What sports do students learn in school/locally? Is the education system facing changes/going through changes/stable The roles of state, private, specialist and faith schools The age at which pupils begin and end compulsory education How are pupils and teachers addressed? How many hours of sport is taught in school per week? Do schools and sports clubs work together? Examinations (national/local/school) and holiday times The choices which students have following compulsory education How are teachers trained? Employment issues for teachers eg permanent or temporary contracts/national How are potential athletes identified and nurtured?

5 Some initial project ideas Exchange and comparison of data in a curriculum area - information on food eaten over a week, time spent exercising. Teach each other an indigenous game or sport Run sports festivals at the same time and compare results Exchange of photos/images/artwork on a theme – “my day” “what I can see from my window” “my family” “Russia/UK” day in school– might involve art, food, involvement of local community, pictures from the link school, music Study each locality – look at physical, social, resource use, economic maps; develop tourist brochure for visitors

6 What makes a successful school partnership? Clear aims and objectives Genuine Partnership / Equity-based Knowing your partner school and ensuring any projects meet both schools’ needs Communication teacher to teacher, pupil to pupil Balanced perceptions Teacher Commitment Senior Management Support Flexibility

7 How to design a successful joint curriculum project Aims for the link Consider the strengths of the schools Agree the areas of the curriculum to be involved Embedded in curriculum/ life of school Planning - Achievable timetable and objectives Timing –project activities, visits, school holidays, exams Agree roles – who does what Who will be involved – staff and pupils Community involvement Contingency – who else in school can be involved Evaluation from start Dissemination

8 Funding arrangements British Council school-linking visits –Grants of up to £1000 to visit your Russian link school to plan or carry out joint curriculum work Anglo-Russian Teacher Fellowships –1-2 weeks in a Russian school undertaking professional research projects of benefit to the school’s development plan –Maximum grant of £1000 towards travel, accommodation, subsistence and supply cover British Council joint curriculum projects –maximum grants of £5000

9 What do we look for in joint curriculum project applications? Clear programme of collaborative work with aims, objectives and milestones Clear links to the curriculum in both countries Activities that cover at least one academic year A sense of progression and sustainability – not just a series of ‘getting to know you’ activities Evidence of senior management support Dissemination of project outcomes Evidence of local community involvement and support

10 What can you spend grant on? Eligible expenditure Travel & accommodation Software Materials Small items of hardware <£200 Telephone/internet bills Postage Ineligible expenditure Sightseeing Large items of hardware eg computers, fax machines, photocopiers, video cameras Supply cover for teachers

11 Other sources of funding British Council Russian Immersion Courses –Subsidised residential language courses for students SSAT TIPD school-determined visits –Funding for English teachers to visit their partner schools for professional development The Grants register –Available in all public libraries it is a register of all grant-awarding bodies (obscure trusts etc) Anything on the Russian side (British Council or other organisations)?
