13 Spain Spanish explorer, Cortes, in 1519 invaded the Aztec empire. He conquered them and colonization continued through 1821 by the Spanish.

14 Historical Events and Places Tenochtitlan Located on an island in Lake Texcoco It was the capital of the Aztec Empire in 1325. It was captured by the Spanish in 1521 and became known as Mexico City, the capital of present day Mexico.

15 Mexican War of Independence It was a war between Mexico and Spain in 1810. In 1821, Mexico won their independence from Spain.

16 Mexican American War It was a war between Mexico and the United States in1846. By 1848, Mexico had lost and agreed to give up Texas to the US.

17 Mexican Revolution The Mexican Revolution was a civil war in Mexico. It took place from 1910 to 1920. It ended with the Mexican people gaining freedoms and a constitution.

18 Cultural Characteristics Many indigenous peoples were enslaved or killed during the Spanish conquest. Mexico City is one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

19 Landmarks Chichen Itza Located in Tulum It is a Mayan ruins.

20 Teotihuacan It is located in the Basin of Mexico. They are Aztec ruins.

21 Cancun Cancun is a resort city located on the Yucatan Peninsula. It has beautiful sandy beaches and warm weather.

22 Acapulco Acapulco is a resort city located on the Pacific Ocean. It has beautiful, sandy beaches and warm weather.
